We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Making the decision to move to from my hometown (Pittsburgh, PA) to Atlanta was the single most important decision I made that contributed to my business success. Atlanta has proven to have many more opportunities to interact with people that enjoy entertaining and can appreciate the event services that my company provides. A large percentage of my business is through repeat clientele and referrals.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The majority of my career has been spent in office buildings and cubicles. My background and degree are in Accounting with my latest corporate position being a Senior Sales Analyst. My decision to get into event services was a result of an idea to pick up extra cash to help pay off student loans. I started bartending, picking up gigs through staffing agencies and really enjoyed the work. It was a 180 from my ‘9-5’ work experience which at that point consisted of working from home. It felt like even though I was working, I was, in essence, at a party – and who doesn’t love a good party.
After about a year of experiencing what was truly involved in event services, I felt that I had more to offer than the agencies I was working for and more to gain by marketing my own services and dealing with potential clients directly. My focus for my bartenders and waitstaff became what seemed most important to customers – quality, credibility and flexibility. My motto being ‘Service with Class’.
It hasn’t been easy. My corporate office is currently a staff of one. I perform all the roles of marketing, customer service, accounting, HR, staffing, etc. – sometimes the actual event worker. Although, I don’t have as much free time as I would like, I could not be more proud of the growth and success of my business to date. It gives me joy to know that me and my teams have played such an intricate part in the success of so many special events around the city. From kid’s birthdays to retirement parties, baby showers to home going ceremonies – we’ve done it all.
I am excited about the future of EJ’s Event Services and the potential for growth with continued focus and dedication. Judging by the amount of repeat customers and referrals received, I would like to think I am on the right track.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a visitor for one week for the first time, these are a few places I would try make a point to visit at least once. It may be noticeable from my list – I don’t get out much nowadays.
Breakfast: IHOP, Flying Biscuit
Lunch: Cafe Sunflower, Slutty Vegan
Dinner: Bahama Breeze, South City Kitchen
Learn: Civil Rights Museum, Kennesaw Mtn., Trap Museum
Hang: Little 5 Points, latest popular lounge in the city, Main Event/Top Golf
Visit (Just to say you did): Centennial Park/Ferris wheel, Waffle House, Lennox Mall
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to take the opportunity to shout out my Aunt, Lorette Pendergrast. Since a child, she has always represented grace, love, tenacity and understanding no matter the gravity of the situation. To this day, she still serves as a role model, mentor (and sometimes therapist) as I navigate through the challenges of business ownership – and life in general. She has been the most consistently positive influence in my life and for that, I adore her. Thanks Auntie.
