We had the good fortune of connecting with Eboni Woodbury and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eboni, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
In 2016, I was brainstorming ways to generate more income to pay for my wedding. I’ve always liked strawberries so I thought to sell chocolate covered strawberries. At this time, I was pitching the idea to my family and my younger cousins suggested for me to try to make candy apples. For a year, I tried my hands at chocolate strawberries and candy apples. Since I was shy, I would “employee” my cousins to sell my products. Who can say no to a child? LOL! I then began networking with an event planner who would encourage me to try different dessert items. I had added more confectionary items such as cake pops, chocolate dipped Rice Krispies Treats, Oreos, pretzel rods, and marshmallows. In 2018, I started baking cakes and it has been an experience ever since!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When I am not baking, I serve as a Social Worker. The population that I have the pleasure serving is children. I work with an awesome Developmental Pediatrician and together we help families with children battling developmental concerns. I love what I do. Baking is an escape, however, I firmly believe God wants me to be a Social Worker. No matter how much I try to run from it, I know this what I was called to do.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am an Atlanta native! I love this city with my heart and soul. If I had a friend visiting the City, I would first have them try our staple crop… HOT WINGS! I think Atlanta have some of the best hot wings in the City. However, if they prefer another dish, I would take them to La Parrilla or No Mas which is my favorite Mexican restaurant. I love Harold’s Chicken and Ice Bar on Edgewood as well! In regards to attractions, I think it is essential to tour historical landmarks; downtown is full of life; the aquarium and the Ferris Wheel are amazing as well. I am afraid of heights, however, I would take them to Six Flags or White Waters for fun. Lastly, allowing my friends to relax and have game nights at the house is another agenda item.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family is my major supporters, particularly my loving husband. I’m a first generation college graduate and I think my family values my insight on various situations. Since becoming an entrepreneur, I’ve found it to be my responsibility to instill knowledge regarding generational wealth and stability. I believe at my young age, I am on the path to building an empire for my children. I currently have a beautiful baby girl who I know looks up to me. Its a different responsibility since this is MY child. The name of my business, Royal Kay Berries, was named after my children before their births. I wanted to be able to show them and others that having financial freedom is the most precious and rewarding life experience.
