Hi Dr. Terriyln, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
Growing up in Savannah, GA, I was blessed with profound influences from my parents, Levone Rivers and Catherine James Rivers, who gave me life, as well as my grandparents, James and Hattie Mae Bentley Rivers, my Aunt Katie Mae Rivers Tindal, my mentor and social worker, and my prayer partner, Sharon Rivers Bowers. These remarkable individuals played pivotal roles in shaping who I am today.

My grandparents, James and Hattie Mae Bentley Rivers, instilled in me the values of resilience, hard work, and compassion. They taught me the importance of perseverance and the power of kindness, which have been guiding principles throughout my life.

My Aunt Katie Mae Rivers Tindal was a pillar of strength and dedication. Her commitment to family and community inspired me to give back and support those around me. She showed me the significance of being a positive force in the lives of others.

My mentor, a dedicated social worker, provided invaluable guidance and support as I embarked on my career. Her example demonstrated the profound impact that compassionate and dedicated social work can have on individuals and communities. She reinforced my commitment to advocacy and support for those in need.

Sharon Rivers Bowers, auntie, and prayer partner, has been a source of spiritual strength and guidance. Her prayers and unwavering support have kept me grounded and focused on my mission, providing me with the encouragement needed to overcome challenges and stay true to my purpose.

These influences have collectively molded me into the person I am today. They taught me the value of empathy, the importance of community, and the necessity of striving for equity and inclusion. I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to several key influences in my life. First and foremost, my Auntie Katie Mae Rivers Tindal, a fellow social worker, has been a guiding light of inspiration. Her dedication to the field showed me the profound impact one can have through social work. My grandmother also provided the vision, reflection, and guidance needed to write “Reclaim Your Power: Where The Journey to Mental Wellness Begins.” Their legacies have instilled in me the resilience and determination essential for this path.

Additionally, I am deeply grateful to my immediate and extended family members. My husband, Audrey Cannon, provides an ear that I can bend along with ongoing support, and my children reinforce the importance of bringing our mission to the forefront with fidelity, ensuring it is neither hidden nor ignored. Their support and encouragement have been cornerstones of my journey, providing me with the strength and motivation to persevere.

The connection with fellow like-minded colleagues who believe in and understand this uniquely skilled profession has been invaluable. Their collaboration and insights have provided both inspiration and practical guidance, reinforcing the importance of our collective mission.

Moreover, local, state, and national organizational memberships and leadership opportunities have played a significant role in shaping my career. Organizations like the School Social Workers Association of Georgia, National Association of Social Workers, National Association of Black Social Workers, and the School Social Work Association of America have been instrumental. These platforms have offered me opportunities for growth, learning, and advocacy, helping to hone my skills and expand my impact.
