Meet Dr. Shawnise Carter | Author, Speech Language Pathologist, & Home Care Agency Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Shawnise Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Shawnise, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
The most important impact that I have, as a mother of five, is to raise my children to have knowledge and fear of God. I am committed to live a life with God included in my everyday decisions. It is important that they have their own relationship with God, as my older children are now college aged. They have decisions to make on their own. Prayer provides me some reassurance because I know that it is powerful! I don’t want them thinking that God is some far away deity who sits in heaven and has no knowledge of their everyday life. Whether it’s studying and praying before a test or talking to God throughout the day, I want them to know that God is as close as their breath. He is everywhere! My goal is to highlight the presence of Christ in situations that impact them daily so that He becomes more real to them.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

The name of my business is HealthyCare HomeCare LLC. It is a home care business that provides services to seniors-who want to age at home, children- with special needs, people- who need special assistance with everyday tasks.

I am also an author. The title of my book is ‘My Hero Story, God’s Glory: How to Overcome Betrayal, Delay, and Loss.’

I’ve been through so many challenges in life that I had to write a book about it! The purpose of my book is to use the experiences that I’ve gone through to show people how to have success in spite of adversity. There was a time in my life when I was getting hit with back to back challenges. Life was life-ing! At one point, I realized this had to be bigger than me. This had to be for someone else. I couldn’t be going through all of this for nothing. I promised myself and God that when I got on the other side, I would tell people how He brought me through it!

If anyone were to look at my life story, I would want them to know that my faith in God brought me through a lot of tough situations. I want to emphasize that more than anything else. Consequently, my failures kept me going. I didn’t achieve things by trying and succeeding the first time. I had to try again and again and again. My success is a direct consequence of what my failures taught me. In essence, my failures taught me what not to do and how to go in the direction of success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I am from Chicago. I live in Northwest Indiana and that’s where my business is based. I am only a 30-minute drive from Chicago. For fun and entertainment I go to Chicago. I would start off with a brunch at either of these places- Stax Cafe, Theory-Chicago, The L Station, The Duplex, Lizzy J Cafe, or TimeOut Market-Chicago, to name a few. IYKYK

Next would be spa treatments at a local spa or The Wit Hotel downtown. A few of my friends have boats so we’d have to do something on the lake during the summer. For the evening, there are always outdoor parks with live music, salsa, Jazz in the park. We also have a lot of outdoor music parks around the city and surrounding suburbs. They always have weekly live performers in the summer.

River North is a nice place to go when you want to visit a lot of shops and hold your plans loosely for the day. There’s always something to get into.

Another day that week would have to include a beach day. When the weather is just right, heading to the beach to swim in the water & play beach volleyball is a Chi-town must! At night, there are all kinds of dinner cruises that usually include food, a full dance floor with a DJ, and ends with fireworks over the lake.

Finally, there’s plenty of food, entertainment, & shopping. The Gold Coast is filled with all of the shopping a girl could want. Our surrounding outlet malls in O’Hare or Old Orchard are all day events. The possibilities are endless.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My sister recommended me for this article. She has been a huge supporter of all of my endeavors! She has seen me through my worst times and my best times. She is an amazing celebrator! My parents raised me to love God and my Dad gave me the hustle spirit that I have. Entrepreneurship takes hustle and persistence. My Mom has been the voice of reason. She has taught me so much about patience, love, sacrifice, loving God, being a loving mother and a loving wife. My brother has always supported my career and entrepreneurial endeavors. My husband is my sounding board! He has been there showing acts of love, encouragement, support, and consistency. I thank God for all of my family! I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
