We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Randy Hines II and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Randy, how do you think about risk?
Pursuing a career in entertainment takes a huge amount of risk. Especially, if you’re trying do it as a career and not a hobby. It is not the safest path to take and lets people look inside your inner thoughts. Consequently, this can lead to a whirlwind of thoughts and self-doubt. Am I filling a void that is needed? Am I wasting my time or money? Will people think I’m strange? Does my voice sound weird? These are some of the thoughts that I had before starting my medical podcast and now trying my hand at stand-up comedy. The risks associated with both were totally different.

The risk associated with my podcast included taking the time to start a podcast which wasn’t a small undertaking, investing money, and failure. On the opposite end the risk associated with doing stand-up comedy included not being funny, feeling nervous, and being vulnerable to my weird inner thoughts. Each one of the items and many others ran through my brain as I contemplated doing each one of these. Does being a successful podcaster or comedian outweigh the risks of being a failure at one if not both? In order to push past these thoughts, I had to draw upon past instances of things I had been successful in before. These successful risk-taking moments included completing medical school, writing a novel, and moving to a new city on multiple occasions. Each one of these things along with many required me to take some sort of measured risk and come out successful on the other end. Therefore, I was less hesitant to take up these new endeavors because of the past success I had. The negative inner voice comments were now silent.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Recently, I have started a career in stand-up comedy. On multiple occasions I have been told that I’m funny. However, there is a difference between being funny in conversation and when performing. Therefore, I decided to test out my funny and take a stand-up comedy class. I learned the ins and outs of the art including how to walk on stage, write jokes properly, and how to engage the crowd. Learning the art of comedy was harder than I thought, but I enjoyed the process, and it made me have a greater respect for the craft of comedy. Being a physician in this space set me apart from my fellow classmates and allowed my content to be uniquely different. Graduation night was fun, and I killed it. If you don’t believe it you can check it out on my YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avJF9idI1UQ). I was proud of myself for trying to do something out of the norm and being successful at it. I was able to get outside of the box that physicians are put in and get out my creative juices in another way. My goal is to make people laugh, but also educate them on their health along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The city of Atlanta has so much to offer that it is impossible to fit everything into one day. There is always something to do from sunup to sundown. If it was during the summertime, I would know the perfect places to go to for a fun summer experience if one of my friends came in town. The day would start with brunch. Some of my favorite brunch spots include Ms. Iceys Kitchen Bar, Highland Bakery, and Murphy’s. Next, we would go to one of the finest museums in Atlanta, the Trap Museum. This would definitely give a picture of the history of southern rap royalty. After being educated on southern hip hop music we would probably go to Ponce City Market for lunch and walk part of the Beltine to get a little exercise in while people watching. If the Braves are in town we would hit up a nighttime game to cheer them on to victory. If the Braves aren’t in town and its a Friday we would go to the High Museum for High Frequency Friday where would enjoy the arts and live music. This would be followed by going to one of the local speakeasys for a drink. I would tell you which one but, I’ve been sworn to secrecy. The night would end with a trip to Waffle House playing hip hop music or Fellini’s pizza.
