Meet Dr. Ralph Simspson | Deputy Superintendent

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Ralph Simspson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Ralph, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is based upon grit, resilience, and perseverance. I experienced so much failure throughout my academic journey, However, I chose the path less traveled by never accepting no for an answer and continuing to work harder. I had the unfortunate experience of having to repeat things, but instead of quitting, I believed that eventually I would prevail. There is a distinct difference between the “story” and “glory”. My journey is a compelling story, but what I was able to overcome and accomplish is the glory.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My first book is entitled “From Remedial to Remarkable”. It’s story of how I struggled as a student who hated school, yet went on to earning a doctorate degree. As a Corrections Officer right out of college, I had the unfortunate pleasure of witnessing so many Black Males incarcerated. After 4 years, this life altering experience forced me to either become a part of the problem or the solution. I chose the solution! My solution was based on doors! I literally chose to go from the back door of the jailhouse to the front door of the schoolhouse. I began teaching and in a matter of 4 years I was thrust into a leadership role as an assistant principal.
Further, I went on to become a principal at 3 different and challenging high schools and ultimately promoted to the position of Regional Superintendent. After 5 years in that role, I was demoted because to an assistant principal related to schools purchasing my first book, “From Remedial to Remarkable”. It was a devastating and traumatic experience I had ever experienced. Without a blueprint or strategic plan, I had to rebound, rebuild, and re-establish what had been a productive and successful career. Through hard work, diligence, and determination, I worked my way back to the position of Regional Superintendent in 5 years. Shortly thereafter, I was promoted to the position of Deputy Superintendent in another local school district. Because my failure was public, I wanted others to benefit from my experience, so I pinned the next book, “ From Demotion to Promotion”, as a guide and a road map on how to bounce back after a setbacks.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live a pretty simple and consistent life, My favorite restaurant is a small eatery in College Park ,The Brake Pad. I would take them to The Battery because it provides a variety of bars, restaurants, and entertainment. We would definitely take up a baseball game while there. I’m very particular about the people who I spend time with, so a gathering of like minded individuals would be a must.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The love and support from my parents, Mr. Henry Simpson and Ms. Roxie Simpson was unwavering. My brother, Henry J. Simpson has always been my biggest fan, but all of the credit goes to God almighty for blessing with the ability to do what I do. Dr. Percy Mack has served as my professional mentor since I was a teacher. His guidance and encouragement led me through some very tough times. My beloved brothers of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity always provide a shield of protection as well as a reminder that overcoming challenges is a part of our DNA. My childhood best friends, Tony Owens, Al Ringer, Kevin Ware, along with my best friend later in life, Randal Reid continue to lift me up. Dr. LaNekia Pruitt, for staying by my side when no one else did. And lastly, to my wonderful children, son Chandler, and daughter Skyla, for my being.
