We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Oluwatamilore Odimayo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Odimayo, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
I define success as reaching a level of self-actualization based on the Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs. Money and fame can be someone’s definition of success, but the truth is, identifying or creating your purpose on earth is the real definition of success. The execution of that purpose is another level of success.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
During the pandemic, I was faced with an existential crisis. I asked myself, “If the world was to end today, did I really live my life?” After answering that question, I began writing my current bestselling book, “How to be a Mental Health Savage.” In it I talk about the power of the BLT approach. BLT stands for Be Yourself, Live with Intention and Trust your instincts. This is is the approach I teach my clients on a daily basis. Because of this approach I took a huge leap of faith to move from a steady job with steady income to a practice that is based on clientele. It didn’t make sense in the beginning, but I realized I had to trust my instincts.

I believe if anyone practices being themselves, they will find satisfaction being in line with their purpose and will attract the right people and situations into their lives. Unfortunately, we are a society of people who wear masks and don’t even know we’re wearing masks. Each time we put on a façade or pretend, we are doing ourselves a disservice because it will attract people who are attracted to the mask we are portraying and not our true selves. I had to intentionally create an environment where I can be myself as a clinician and that was part of the reasons I shifted to private practice. The book, How to be a Mental Health Savage, provides tips on how to manage spiritual, physical, financial, emotional, intellectual and social health.

With the books release, I was able to grow my clientele locally and nationally. It was not easy to keep up with the demands of podcasts and radio shows while working on my doctorate and working at the same time. However, I learned that if I could be intentional about meeting my goals a little bit at a time, I could achieve more.

Today, I have a podcast called Mental Health Savage, I have done more than 20 live interviews with various mental health experts on Instagram. and engaged in workshops that I never thought I would have prior to the pandemic. I have authored 8 books (five novels and three self help books). Through this, I learned that some of our dreams and aspirations don’t have to make sense. The universe begins to reveal the bigger picture the moment we take steps towards our passions, goals and aspirations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Springfield, Illinois is a small city that is known for “horseshoes”. A horseshoe is a tasty meal that made with fries, choice of meat, texas toast on the bottom, and special cheese sauce. It can be customized the way you want it. Two restaurants offer it, “Darcy’s Pint” and “Brickhouse grill and pub”. Though, Darcy’s pint were the original creators, but Brickhouse grill and Pub has the best buffalo chicken horseshoes.

Springfield, Illinois is also the home of beloved president, Abraham Lincoln. You can visit the Abraham Lincoln Museum, which has rich American History.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my parents for recognizing my passion for psychology at an earlier age and for proving emotional and financial support. I would also like to give a shoutout to a book I read as a teenager, “The Secret” in which I learned the power of positive thinking and the Law of Attraction.
