We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. LaTracey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr., have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
My balance has evolved from being more career centered to more legacy grounded. For years, I was the bottleneck in the company and it affected my health totally. One cannot have balance and neglect their well-being. Knowing that my life is the example, I decided to live for not only my children, those I serve while leaving a legacy. I decided to make balance my goal.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Black Authors Rock (B.A.R or BAR) is a full-service literary firm; one specializing in coaching, consulting, publishing and bookstore. Supporting black authors and others on their journey to literary equality. BAR is located inside the Offices of Spenryn in Madison, Al.
Being determined not to give up, Dr. LaTracey educated herself while laying building a solid foundation for the arts.

Founded by Dr. LaTracey McDonald, in Ocean Springs, MS, B.A.R. made Huntsville its permanent home in the Spring of 2022. The B.A.R. Bookstore showcases formidable, engaging, and up-and-coming Black authors. These authors pen everything from children’s books, to fiction, to self-help books and more.

Moreover, the organization runs and sponsors The B.A.R. Arts Collective; a non-profit organization that is seeking t0 thrive within the upper echelon of the artist industry; as a Black organization inclusive of multiple variations of the arts, of entrepreneurship, and of consultation.

“Sexy With a Pen–After Dark” removes the idea that writers aren’t sexy! BAR insists on showing you otherwise with this sensational and sensual, after-five, burlesque-themed extravaganza! If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As I mentioned previously, being a new resident of the Rocket City, I’d invite them out to the Sexy With A Pen After Dark Event.

We all love to dress up! The Great Gatsby is played out…why not dress up in the tantalizing burlesque styled clothes. Suspenders, and slack for him and feathers, pearls and sassy dress for her. Awakening every one of your senses is exactly what you need when visiting.

Moulin Rouge wasn’t only a movie but the them of Cajun food and decor. This event is only the beginning to think out the box for the arts.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Black Authors Rock! Without this full service literary firm and bookstore, I would not be the woman I am today. I realized that the very thing I needed was being created to edify, equip and enlighten black authors on their journey to equality.

Shoutout to those in the Black Authors Rock Community and it’s team! We all have a story and yet you all have been amazing at teaching me what it means to be family out here in these literary streets.
