We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kelly O. Elmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Kelly O., other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The single most important decision has been to “say yes and stay ready!” Throughout my entire life, I’ve set goals, prayed, envisioned, and trusted that everything will work together for the good. My decisions are based on knowing that I will land on my feet and success is my birthright. I don’t allow fear and/or anxiety to inhibit me from taking on new challenges, walking uncharted territories, or disconnecting from “who” I am and knowing “whose” I am – my faith is strong.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Wow, that’s a great question and journey. I’ve known since I was six I wanted to be a Doctor. I’m not sure how because there weren’t any college graduates in my immediate family. I was called to the pulpit of medicine, Women’s health more specifically, As the youngest of 5, to a wonderful woman who survived sexual and physical abuse, I was clear that I needed I wanted to help women have a safe place to recover and prevent them from experiencing the trauma and abuse. I mastered my school work and athletic endeavors. Attended The Xavier University of Louisiana which created a foundation of confidence and security so I could excel, then I received a full military scholarship to medical school and my journey skyrocketed from there. Always the top of my game, innovative and focused on service and community, I stayed ready to take on the hard opportunities. With great support, mentorship, and advocacy I completed my MBA, started my own Healthcare consulting firm and navigated the US Navy as an active duty officer. Never stopping and with my family by my side, not always physically, I was meritoriously promoted to CAPTAIN and competitively selected to be the Chief of Staff of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. All the while, doing my best to be the woman, wife, mother, daughter, sibling, friend and colleague God created me to be.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would mix luxury and fun. A beautiful spa day with yoga and meditation mixed in .
Visit the Atlanta Botanical Garden, go on a peaceful stroll through beautiful gardens.
Explore the Atlanta BeltLine, take a leisurely walk or bike ride along the BeltLine’s paved trails.
Experience the Georgia Aquarium, looking at the incredible marine life, I use to want to be a marine biologist.
Indulge in Southern Cuisine there are so many good ones it’s hard to narrow it down but we must have shrimp and grits, and peach cobbler.
Relax at Piedmont Park and go picnicking, paddle boating, or simply lounging on the grass. With a blanket and zyrtec because allergies won’t ruin this trip.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely, I am all about giving credit where it’s due. First God- always and forever. My mother Margaret- my rock, my wise counsel, and constant prayer warrior. Monte Jones, my loving and fully supportive husband, dedicated father, committed son and Amazing CEO of Logan Heights CDC. Our children who hold us accountable and keep us laughing. My sponsors, advocates, and mentors to include RADM(r) Annie B. Andrews whose positive energy, words of encouragement and guidance truly helped me make great decisions in the last year. My friend groups- active and retired military, Chicago, San Diego, DMV, Los Angeles, and my fellow Xavier and The University of Chicago alum. There are so many, I can’t name them but it takes a massive village to undergird me and God’s vision for me.
