We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Denisha Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Denisha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Many thoughts, ideas, dreams, and goals can simply stay in your head if you never have the courage to act upon them. Therefore, my thought process for starting my own business was a very simple, emotional, and spiritual decision. I often would come up with ideas and write dreams in my daily journal, but never actually put any work behind those thoughts. One day in the middle of the night, as I was writing my business ideas out and creating a vision for myself I said to myself, “Who am I? God has given me these ideas and dreams for myself, if I don’t act upon what he already told me is possible, I will never know what could actually happen for me.” Immediately, with my ideas overflowing in my brain, I grabbed a pen and wrote down potential names for my educational business, which is Fantastic Academic Nourishment (FAN) Educational Services and the rest was history!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We assist with developing children’s academic and social emotional needs. FAN Educational Services provides innovative virtual and in-person teaching methods, project based learning opportunities, and customized academic plans to meet any individual child’s needs from ages 3 to 13 years old. FAN Educational Services is committed to meeting the needs of children and helping them reach their fullest potential. Currently, we are serving scholars across the country in Nevada, New York, Georgia, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C. to name a few.

In addition to the educational services FAN provides, I self publish educational workbooks to meet the needs of young scholars as well. Thus far, I have published a collection of motivational handwriting books to teach or improve handwriting, while building children’s self- esteem and confidence. The books are as follows, My Motivational Print Handwriting & Numbers Workbook, My First Motivational Print Handwriting Workbook, My Motivational Cursive Handwriting & Multiplication Workbook, and My First Motivational Cursive Handwriting Workbook. The handwriting books are something dear to my heart. In addition to academic skill- building activities, the books also include positive affirmations that encourage children to speak positively about themselves. Ultimately, helping them navigate life’s hardest interactions. With my mission and passion for education, I hope FAN Educational Services continues to flourish to support the whole child while spreading positivity through our tutoring services, educational workbooks, educational consulting services, professional development, and so much more to come!

While FAN Educational Services continues to flourish, I can say that starting this business is one of the most rewarding things I have done. There are obstacles with learning what to do and what not to do which could be difficult. However, with mistakes, speed bumps, and detours, on this journey you learn to listen and to follow your instincts. The best advice I can give someone starting a business is to write down your goals, give yourself a timeline, and to pray for what you want. These three simple lessons have taught me that patience is the key to the journey of a small business owner. Success with different goals in your business may not happen when you want it, but it will happen right in time! You will have good days and bad days, but the reward of fulfilling your mission and purpose should always drive you to keep going and never give up!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

When my friends visit Atlanta we are definitely planning a good time!

I love to cook and bake, so I enjoy cooking them a nice meal, but my favorite spots during the week to visit would be the following:

Breakfast At Barney’s
Slutty Vegan
Garden Parc
Life Bistro
Slim and Huskys

We would hang out where there is fun and enjoyment for adults, which could be anywhere. There is much to do and enjoy in Atlanta! On any day of the week you could find something which is what I enjoy since I’m not a planner, I move on how I feel.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I would like to dedicate my shout out to my parents! My parents, George and Evarn, are my greatest supporters. Their love and support mean the world to me. They always make it known that they support me and believe in me. FAN Educational Services just wouldn’t be the same without George and Evarn and for that I’m grateful!

Additionally, I would like to shout out to my dearest teachers who inspired me to be the educator that I am today. Thank you so much to Mrs. Robinson-Mays, Mrs. Swain, Ms. Beard, Mr. Jones, Mr. Harris, Dr. Clark, Ms. Rivers, Mrs. Walker, and Mrs. Carlyle. Your teaching beyond the classroom made a difference in my life!
