Meet Dr. Amera McCoy | Founder & CEO of Minority Business Circle

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Amera McCoy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Amera, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
After consulting for small businesses for several years the pandemic hit and I lost several of my clients overnight. They were unable to keep their doors open due to a lack of available funding for their business. Most were newer and not in a position to receive the max funds available through government programs. I learned quickly it was essential business pieces holding them back from eligibility. So I set out to solve this problem and to bring funding to minority business owners. by closing the gaps in their businesses and building long-standing relationships with lenders. Minority Business Circle is specifically created to guide owners to funding through transparency, information, and access.
What should our readers know about your business?
Minority Business Circle is a small business marketplace with classes, connections, coaches, and capital resources all in one dashboard. Our business is created to help minorities succeed in establishing business essentials that will assist with long-term business capital. Our journey to offering this platform was not easy. I have no tech background and had to build a team that could make my vision come alive, not just the look and feel but the impact. I wanted to log in and have the resources I search for all day at my fingertips as a business owner. I knew it was possible but it meant trusting my idea to someone who could execute it. Many business owners “gatekeep” their great ideas until someone else is on the market living their dream. I didn’t want to lose an opportunity to fill a gap in the market because I was afraid to share my idea with people who could help me. A trustworthy team is the key to building a successful company.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is always a good time just this past weekend we had brunch at Boogalou Restaurant and Lounge, partied in the lobby of the Moxy hotel, and played a bunch of games. Moxy is probably the best low-cost time anyone could have in Atlanta it’s definitely a hidden gem when you are out of options.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My life is immensely full of pushers, some that push forward and others get me back on track when I start to sway off the rails. My family is my everyday pushers while I have friends that step in with the needed encouragement and drinks when the time permits. On this journey, I am also gaining mentors and sponsors from other organizations that are really changing how I think and how I view success.
