We had the good fortune of connecting with DPretty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DPretty, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I started music when I discovered the talent I had after being challenged to make a song better than what I heard on the radio, in addition to my love of music. I also wanted to use the platform to help others, in Africa, specifically, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which is my native country. So when we started a non-profit organization, Congolese Genocide Awareness (www.drcga.org), I turned into a song the letter by Patrice Lumumba, one of DRC’s most prominent politicians and independence leaders he wrote to his wife while being incarcerated and before being killed, into a song. So then I decided since I have this passion, why not use it to promote social change.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an Afro-pop recording artist with an international appeal. My musical style is described as Afro-Pop with a mix of pop music stemming from musical influences such as Congolese groups like Wenge Musica 4X4, artists such as Papa Wemba, Koffi Olomide, Jean Goubald, Fally Ipupa and American music icons Michael Jackson, Jay Z, Kanye West, Drake, many R&B artists as well as reggae artists Bob Marley, Sean Paul and Shaggy.

I pursued an artistic career because I enjoy creating music a lot and performing is something I love doing. It comes easy to me, and I can do this everyday. I spent a lot of time talking about and doing something in music and it doesn’t feel like work.

I’m inspired by everyday life and experiences I have or have learned from. I think there are a lot of lessons learned daily to be used and shared in songs to teach and inspire the world.

I feel the determination I have to get things done, the ability to understand how important preparation is, and the ability to learn from my mistakes are habits that help me succeed. I take music seriously, so I do my best to maximize every opportunity.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to a Hawks, and Atlanta United game. Those are great sports team with great fans. To eat, I would take them to eat at Peach and Pork Chop, Lola’s, and or Ponce City Market. I also like hanging out at Atlantic Station, and the Avalon. I also love visiting the historic site in Atlanta such as MLK’s area, Coca Cola, the aquarium, and CNN center.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my wife, Jochebed Pink, who has been an incredible supporter. I also want to give my family, parents & siblings, for their consistent support.
