We had the good fortune of connecting with Dove Bennett and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dove, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factors that have contributed to my success would be both my refusal to limit myself as well as my willingness to take risks. When planning out my goals and where I see myself in the future, I focus on exactly where I envision myself in my career, regardless of my circumstances, lack of knowledge, or lack of funding. I do not limit my goals based on the fact that I have no idea of how I am going to accomplish them. After I map out my goals, I put myself into a mindset where they will be accomplished by any means necessary, and this is where the risk comes in. A lot of people get in their own way by avoiding the risk of going after what it is that they are trying to achieve if the obstacles appear to be too difficult. I, on the other hand, put in the time, energy, and money that is going to get me from ground zero, all the way to success. This could mean sending out email after email and getting no response, yet I continue to send them out. This could mean investing thousands of dollars and having no idea if I will be getting a return on those investments. And this means that I’ll step out of my comfort zone when opportunities are before me that I may not necessarily feel that I am ready for. I love myself way too much to ever tell myself no. That alone makes the risk such a small price to pay for the reward.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is my willingness to be set apart. Many times professionals will try to conform to the norms of society, or they’ll attempt to mimic the success of others, thinking that it will allow them to achieve that same level of success for themselves. I embrace all of the things that make me weird, that makes me different and that helps me to stand out. Not only do I embrace it, but I strive for it. When I am completing a task, I will spend hours making sure that whatever content I am creating is unique in every way imaginable. The largest obstacle faced would be the negative opinions of others. When you share ideas that are unique in nature, it’s common that those around you will be skeptical and verbalize their doubts. I am most proud of the fact that I’ve grown to block out the naysayers and go for it anyway. Because of this, I now have to opportunity to work with Netflix on my next project, my new book titled “We’re All in This Together; 31 Days of Quarantine”. Not only is the book extremely unique in its nature, by being a collection of fiction, nonfiction, poems and contributions all in one book, but when I originally shared that I would need to collaborate with Netflix, many attempted to steer me away, suggesting that working with the major streaming service would be unobtainable. During my journey of entrepreneurship, I’ve learned that nothing is unobtainable, and this thought-process has allowed me to get to where I am today. I just want everyone to know that the very first step to accomplishing success in your career, is knowing without a doubt that you can accomplish it. Yes, you will be afraid, yes, you will have your doubts, and yes, you will often have setbacks, but keep going.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
If my best friend were visiting for a weekend, we’d start the Saturday with a “Do it for the culture” tour, which outlines so many great historical places and events all over Atlanta. We’ll eat lunch at “Old Lady Gang”, since I’m a huge fan of Kandi Burruss and I’d love to try some great recipes from Mama Joyce and Aunt Nora. After lunch we’ll go to take a pottery class in Decatur, simply because I’ve always wanted to make pottery and I hear that they have a wonderful studio there. Then, we’ll end the day by visiting a twerk dance class. My ability to twerk is absolutely nonexistent, but that won’t stop us from having fun and making complete fools of ourselves. Then on Sunday, we’ll stay inside all day and order in all different kinds of food from different cultures and backgrounds and binge watch Netflix, lol.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my children. Entrepreneurship can be such a bumpy climb and it is often difficult to stay motivated through disappointments and failures. Many successful people will argue that a mindset is the single most valuable asset when it comes to achieving success. My children are the ones who keep me in a determined and positive mindset. They make me laugh when I am feeling stressed, they help me think creatively when I am feeling stuck, and they remind me what I am working towards when I just feel like giving up. I strongly credit myself to them.
