We had the good fortune of connecting with Doug Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Doug, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted complete control. I worked in the corporate world for 10 years and grew tired of layers of management that didn’t have a clue what it is was doing. Their poor decision making affected my paycheck! Add to that the stress of being held accountable for things I had no control over. I wanted total freedom and responsibility for my future. I’ve been self employed for over 23 years now, and I could never work for a boss again-I’m the boss!
I prepared by building up my savings to cover expenses for a year (to keep me afloat while getting my business started). I spent several years working part time evenings building up a clientele, while still keeping my 9-5 day job. It was risky, but I had a passion and knew I could grow a successful business. It wasn’t easy, and there were constant pitfalls along the way, but I believed it was possible and I succeeded!
What should our readers know about your business?
I’ve been a personal trainer for over 30 years, and I currently train clients online all over the world by FaceTime, Skype, and Zoom. I think what sets me apart is good rapport and communication with my clients. I get results because I take the time to listen, and find out what they want and need. I explain the program and exercises to them-what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how it will help them get the results they want. I do my best to motivate and inspire, while taking the time to get to know them. And a sense of humor goes a long way to building customer loyalty.
I’m most proud of the work I’ve done with clients who are in pain or have injuries. There’s nothing more rewarding than helping a person eliminate pain and correct muscle imbalances that can lead to injury. It makes my day when a client tells me they feel so much better and are now able to participate in all the activities or sports they enjoy!
It hasn’t been easy to get where I am today. Long hours, intense competition, and constant problem-solving are all part of my business. There have been many challenges, and things don’t always go as planned, Training methods and practices are constantly changing, and continuing education is so important to keep up. I’ve overcome challenges by working even harder and not being afraid to ask for help or advice. I’ve found people older than myself have a lot of wisdom to pass on, all you have to do is ask!
The main lesson I’ve learned in all my years is to take advantage of opportunity. It may involve something outside of your comfort zone, but you will come out stronger and more successful by pushing yourself to try. Some of the worst things I’ve ever gone through have led to great opportunities and helped me branch out and gain new skills. Don’t be afraid!
I’m now in my late 50s, but I’m not done yet! I enjoy training older clients, because I know the struggles and health issues they face as they age-I’m one of them! It’s so rewarding to show people how they can be their best through their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. I’ve always admired Arnold Schwarzenegger and all he’s accomplished, but my true role model was fitness pioneer Jack LaLanne. He worked out until the day he died at age 96. I hope to follow in his foot steps!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My best friend Mark DeJaynes! I was always nervous about starting my own business and the risk involved. When he opened his own business and overcame all kinds of obstacles to rise to the top of his field, I was inspired. I decided if he could do it, I could too! If not for him and the example he set, I don’t think I would be where I am today.
