We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorothy Horton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dorothy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my business was to create change for the better among the elderly community. To create opportunities for employees to enjoy the flexibility of working, and freedom to do other things they like. I knew deep down I would one day start and own a business because the majority of my family own businesses. I considered the benefits of having more time for myself, family and friends. I also thought about financial increase and enjoying some of the finer things in life. While the thoughts of loss, failure, increased responsibility and competitiveness often crossed my mind daily, I strive to think and meditate on the positive and stay in conclusion that whatever is for me is for me, if not, then it’s not for me, and that is Okay. Another thought behind starting my own business, was to avoid having to work with toxic people that I knew was not for my best interest, I love having a choice, to walk away or to stay, to speak or to stay quiet, to know or hire someone else that does, to work or stay home, to go anywhere on vacation and stay as long as I want without having to save time or participate in PTO. Starting my own business back in 2019 was one of the most rewarding choices I could have made..

Having personal interaction with every client and developing trust is what sets us apart, keeping a high reputation by constantly communicating and keeping my word or promise is a must, even when challenges arise, I strive to keep everyone that is involved, informed. Being genuine and transparent helps minimize unpleasant surprises. I am most proud of knowing that all our clients understand our strive and know we as a team provide our best in service. Many times, I have provided free service or pro-rated services for those who couldn’t afford believing that it would pay=off one way or another.
I got where I am today in businesswise by observing my parent’s business. I watched my father utilize vendors and accountants, while also noticing my mother giving away free products to the poor. Watching all these practices as a young teen- planted a seed of balance, I now know I have to give some in order to receive. My parents stayed in business over 20 years in success, so I know this system worked for them and it works for me.
Nothing has come easy for me, being that I started this business as a one-woman team, that grew to many. Working as many as 24 hours day to accommodate clients, I often went with little to no sleep. Whenever I meet someone like-minded as me, I offered them the opportunity to assist and they did, Overcoming the challenges took one day at a time, answering one question at a time, addressing one person at a time, accepting one decline or failure at a time, embracing one new client at a time, while burying another one, wiping one tear at a time and smiling the next hour with another. These were some of the many challenges I learned to adjust too. The lesson learned along the way is to remain calm at all times, even in the midst of darkness, you will eventually see light. What I want the World to know about Quality Care- know that there are businesses that truly care about you and not just money – Quality care is a company that inherits integrity, morals and ethics and is unique in structured services,
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When having a “betsie” visit, I like creating things to do like eating and drinking our favorite slushes at new mom and pop places. The last trip planned was at a hotel in Orlando FL. We enjoyed the lazy river and outside eateries on the island while listening to live music and looking at nightly fireworks. We later went to a nice dance event that allowed us to dress in our finest. When relaxing close to home, I like visiting Chateau Elan for their spas and wines.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The outside strengths, prayers, encouragements and push to carry on goes out amongst many people but the ones standing by my side when it was just a dream and a thought would be my sister, my husband and children.
