We had the good fortune of connecting with Dontrel Hinkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dontrel, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My whole life art has been running though my veins. My family is full of Artist. As a child, I grew up living with my grandfather. One day he brought this piece of wood in. Everyone was thinking why is he putting that piece of wood in the house. He said ‘this is art, art is your vision of art, if you say it’s art it’s art.” I really took that in. So, we I create I create what makes me feel good.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have a corporate career, but I like to think of art as my career as well. The goal is always to just be a Artist. Until then my corporate life will fund my passion. With art I get to take chances, risk, accept any opportunities that comes my way. I’ve heard my old life follow your dreams follow your passion. I’ve always took that advice. So, now I give that same advice. My art has did things for me that I couldn’t believe. So, people follow your dreams

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First the high museum, I love little 5 points, I’m a online shopper lol. Definitely try slutty vegan. Chattanooga food works, it’s a place in there that has the best bao buns. The battery, I live near it and all the bars/ restaurants are amazing. Punch bowl social / cilantro wings , Goldburgs / Cuban eggs rolls. And get a nice drink from Fat Tuesdays. Oh and try the everyday bagel ice cream Jeni’s ice cream.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely want to shout out my dad. He passed recently. In his final years he would tell me to keep my art going. I love you dad, everything I do is dedicated to you.
