Hi Donna, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

My thought process reflects a blend of passion, strategic planning, and a strong commitment to making a positive impact in the arts and fashion industry. I started as a haisr stylist and i produced my first fashion and hair production 40 years ago. I opened my business 38 years ago.

Through her endeavors, Donna aimed to inspire and uplift others, leaving a lasting legacy in the beauty and arts industries.

Donna is most proud of the community she has built through her ventures. From the loyal clientele at Dysonna Hair Studio to the thriving artistic community fostered by Dysonna City Art Gallery and the dynamic events produced by Dysonna Art Productions, her work has consistently uplifted and supported others. The expansion of the Dysonna Scholarship program to South Africa is a particularly proud achievement, providing opportunities and mentorship to aspiring artists on an international scale.

Donna’s professional journey was not without challenges. Establishing a successful business in the highly competitive beauty and arts industries required perseverance and resilience. One significant challenge was breaking into and excelling in fields traditionally dominated by others. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

My father, Art Dyson, was a pioneering figure in the beauty industry, establishing Soul Scissors, a groundbreaking chain of 55 hair salons across the United States that catered to a Black clientele. He trained and mentored young hairstylists around the country, helping them become top-tier professionals who built substantial careers and loyal client bases. His visionary approach and relentless dedication culminated in creating an award-winning showcase that earned him the prestigious First Place Paris Cup, a testament to his exceptional talent and innovative spirit. This monumental achievement not only brought immense pride to our family but also profoundly influenced my own career. Witnessing his success and commitment to excellence inspired me to pursue my passions in the beauty and arts industries, ultimately leading to the establishment of my own ventures. My father’s legacy of creativity, perseverance, and excellence continues to be the guiding force behind all my endeavors.
