We had the good fortune of connecting with Dondre Maestro and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dondre, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Jesus is the most important factor behind the success of my brand. There’s been times I was about to do something on my own concerning my career, and God stopped me from making those mistakes. He always shows me how to be innovative and constantly grow instead of losing focus.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

My music is more of a vibe, than a genre. I think that’s what sets me apart from others, because others can sometime take themselves too serious, especially in this industry. I just flow, and let the right people gravitate.

I’m most excited about the new music and visuals that are on the way, because I’ve been trying to get them done for a while, but I’ve been so busy. I’m finally making time for my career again, so that’s exciting.

I got where I am today because I’ve been trusting God, and He has placed good people around me. Family is so important, and often times, when God does want to elevate you, He will use your family. That’s not easy, because sometimes there’s a temptation to focus on you and disregard your actual family. But I don’t believe in putting your career before your people. If you treat people around you right, God has a way of making everything work out for you.

An important lesson that I’ve learned along the way, is that fear and anxiety are meant to make you stay stagnant. You cannot be afraid, and you cannot be timid. You have to stay ready and prepared for oppositions, and you can’t see yourself small, either.

I want the world to know that, whatever dreams you have, whatever success you’re imagining, you cannot get there without prayer, and Jesus. No matter how much work you put in, you have to pray, and vice versa.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Harold’s is my favorite restaurant in Chicago, for sure. I actually enjoy other places in Chicago too like the Shed Aquarium, and rooftop restaurants. But, in my opinion, the music studios in Chicago are the most interesting to me. I just think the vibes are unmatched. I do want to attend a Fire House church service though, I haven’t been there, yet.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Absolutely my mom. She’s one of my biggest supporters, honestly. She made sure to teach me to take care of my soul, before anything else. She prays over me a lot, and she teaches me so much about the Bible, even now. Her honesty has made me a better artist. She didn’t use to like my music, and I used to think she just didn’t support me being a rapper, or whatever. Then, I took her constructive criticism and my career started doing better.

I know that I can trust her honesty. So, I’ll play some unreleased music for her, and when I notice she’s singing it, I’ll know it’s really worth releasing. It’s always a blessing to have genuine, honest people in your life.
