We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominique, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
If you think about it, we risk our lives everyday in some capacity and the level of risk we take is a direct reflection of our courage. When it comes to entrepreneurship, I do not view risk any differently. Business requires taking calculated risks to progress, and sometimes the risks pay off while other times failure greets you as swiftly as you take your next breath.

I have taken a myriad of risks throughout my life and career, and learned valuable lessons. Those lessons and the “what ifs” are the reasons I continue to take calculated risks, because I know it is the currency to innovation, growth, and improves my chances of success.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
District 85 is a pop culture inspired accessories brand that offers edgy and chic accessories – headbands, headwraps, and jewelry. Our products are named using pop culture references as a fun and creative way to connect with past and current music, movies, television shows, and events. We develop products with the “around the way girl” in mind, and offer iconic, must-have pieces to add to your collection.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your view what are some of the most fun, interesting, exciting people, places or things to check out?
If my best friends are visiting DC, they already know the weekend is going to be a gastronomic experience. I LOVE food! We’re hitting up a couple of spots, including a new favorite, KitchenCray. The fish and grits are sooo good and give us everything we need to catch up on a Friday night. On Saturday, we brunch. Sequoia’s in Georgetown, DC has an ah-mazing brunch – crab cakes, pancakes, omelets, bottomless mimosas and so much more. I can go on and on. The food is good, the vibe is right, and the view is spectacular. Once we sleep off brunch, we’re heading to The Point DC for calamari, crab doughnuts, and fried brussel sprouts with pickled ginger. Before you turn your nose up, TRY IT!  Sunday, we’re hanging at the SW Waterfront. It’s a bit of a gastronomic playground with so many options to grab good food and drinks from. Hank’s Oyster Bar has great french toast and drinks on their brunch menu. After brunch, we’ll end the day with boating and ice cream from Southwest Soda Pop Shop.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My circle. My family and friends’ support has been unwavering; thank you all for contributing to my success. From the late night conversations to the encouragement and words of wisdom, I thrive because of you.
