We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominique Ambrose and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was freedom because I didn’t want the gift God gave me to just be stuck in the corporate world without having the freedom to reach new people and enjoy the fruit of my labor. I also wanted to introduce the people to the energy of flowers and nature. Flowers saved my life when I was dealing with anxiety and depression after the loss of my daughter. I would buy flowers weekly for my home and I just noticed how peaceful and relaxing my home felt when I would buy flowers. I’m that moment I felt like the world needed to know that flowers are a part of self-care and are something that can be used to deal with anxiety, depression, and grief. I decided to start my own business as a florist and saw the response from my customers and since then I’ve been designing.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a floral artist I started designing over 14 years ago as a hobby. I worked in the medical field at the time while pursuing my medical career full-time. I would only do designs for family and friends until I received a corporate job offer as a florist. I started my first job as a florist assistant at a local grocery store I was so excited but within a month of working in the floral department, I felt like this was not the career for me because I was not being taught anything about how to design the right way since Louisiana is the only state in Louisiana that requires you to have a retail floral license to design and sell flower arrangements. I was blessed by one of my floral supervisors to move to another location where I was taught a lot of things about floral design. I then decided to take a floral design course in New Orleans, LA. Because I wanted to learn and know more about the floral industry. The class was truly a blessing and Fresh N Fancy was name was created from our class workbook where I saw the name of a fish company that was an example being used for business math. When I first saw the name I knew that this would be my business name. After I finished the floral design course I decided to take my floral test and passed. 1 year after planning to start my own business my daughter passed away. I decided to relocate to Baton Rouge, LA to get away for a while from my hometown Thibodaux, LA.
Relocating to Baton Rouge has been a huge blessing in my life. I worked as a floral manager with Baton Rouge General Hospital for 3 years and then departed to start my journey with Whole Foods Market as a florist for 8 years. After a major injury, I decided to get back into the business field with Fresh N Fancy with the help of my mother and my team. Once I started training my team and executing the vision God gave me for Fresh N Fancy business has been amazing, we’ve been featured in a local magazine, and we’ve received awards for the community projects we’ve sponsored. Fresh N Fancy is not your average traditional florist we specialize in creating eye-catching floral designs. Our designs are not the only thing that draws customers to us our top-tier customer service, high-end designs, and our unique style keep us a step above the rest. Flowers are art to me and I feel like everyone is blessed with the gift of design.
My mission is to change lives through the gift God has blessed me with and touch hearts through each arrangement my team creates.
“Bloom The Fancy Way” is our slogan.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would bring them to my favorite place in Baton Rouge downtown by the lake and plan a pretty picnic by the lake with pretty flowers. I would also take a field trip to my local vendors and show them how my week normally goes to get ready for events and workshops for our weekly events. We would also take a day trip to New Orleans, LA which is a 45-minute drive from Baton Rouge and visit the lakefront and Landrys Seafood one of my favorite restaurants
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout-out would have to be to one of my biggest inspirations Miss. Myra Richardson. I met Myra a year ago when I applied to be a vendor for a Black Business Month block party for black Entrepreneurs in Baton Rouge, LA. Myra was so motivating and willing to help me when she saw my vision and the gift God gave me. Since then Myra has mentioned my name and my business at multiple tables in our community this has blessed my business tremendously. I’ve been blessed to work with elected officials and corporate leaders in my community. I also have been blessed to serve Change 225 each week with plants which is a local community outreach against gun violence. We serve Change 225 with plants each week for the family members of those who have lost their loved ones to gun violence in our community. This is one of the many community events Fresh N Fancy is proud to be involved in thanks to Myra who is the Chief of the Louisiana Chamber of Commerce for always supporting and mentioning our business we’ve been blessed to be rated as one of the top black florists in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
