We had the good fortune of connecting with DKeith Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DKeith, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Business is fundamentally about service. Whether you’re an employee or an entrepreneur, success hinges on whom you choose to serve (market opportunity) and how well you meet their needs with your product, service, or solution. As an employee, your role is to support the company in delivering value to its customers (product-market fit). Your effectiveness in serving directly impacts your success. Great employees significantly contribute to the organization’s pursuit of customer success. For entrepreneurs, success is similarly tied to serving customer needs profitably, albeit with more control over the customer experience, tempered by market and competitive dynamics. Understanding and leveraging this pattern has been crucial in my journey across various roles.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I believe my greatest strength has always been my curiosity. Delving deeply into diverse areas has proven invaluable over time. In a world where established companies favor pre-built business components, there’s often a bias against generalists—’jack of all trades, master of none’ is seen as an insult. However, I see it differently. For roles requiring a blend of skills—like a developer proficient in Python, e-commerce, and machine learning—finding such talent is akin to finding a unicorn. These individuals, with deep expertise across multiple domains, can be transformative for a company.
My curiosity has shaped me into such a generalist, and it’s a quality that serves me well as a founder aiming to build a unicorn company. Unlike teams of specialists, which larger companies often rely on within their defined budgets, we operate differently. We thrive in the outfield and beyond, seeing the entire playing field and offering unique perspectives that can drive significant innovation and growth.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I believe Atlanta boasts some of the world’s finest architecture. Driving through its neighborhoods reveals a stunning array of homes spanning different eras, each contributing to a uniquely cohesive urban landscape. The city’s art scene is vibrant, though it could benefit from more museums—a topic I won’t delve into. Atlanta’s culinary identity isn’t defined by a single taste or style, yet it hosts some of the nation’s top restaurants. As a local, I may be biased, but I’d choose to dine here over anywhere else.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have had unwavering support from family, friends, and mentors throughout my journey, especially during times of stumbling—which have been plentiful. Knowing they’re there with the right words at the right time makes any setback feel manageable. Their support allows me to dust myself off, regroup, and get back to work. I’m deeply grateful to them and forever indebted.
