We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Soul and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Great question, I was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. Growing up in the rough part of Baltimore was interesting. However, because I was taught by my parents (who happened to be preachers) my life is the way it is today. I would say I’m disciplined, hard working, respectful and resilient. Many of these traits can be attributed to my upbringing and the principles that my parents instilled in me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The best way to describe my art is ‘The Soul Xperience”. As a DJ who has his roots in Gospel music, I take pride on creating mixes that both electrify audiences but also bring joy to folks and brighten their day.

Now, my mixes can be heard every day on multiple radio stations across the country but when I started nearly thirty years ago, it wasn’t the case. I got my start by taking a huge leap of faith by making gospel mixes on a gospel station in my area and initially taking little to no pay for my work. I left a good career to be a DJ and people thought I was crazy, but I all I knew was that this was for me and that God was with me.

It definitely wasn’t and isn’t easy. I overcame and continue to overcome by always improving on my craft (especially within my niche), studying and serving each audience based on their needs and being a willing resource to the stations and various groups group learning how to study the crowd what the moment. But most of all, I really believe that my faith is the foundation for my life and has help me overcome, learn, and grow both as a DJ but also as a man.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Baltimore, MD

I am a proud vegan so I love to go to vegan spots in the city. One of my favorite spots is called Land of Kush.
