We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ ROS and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ, what makes you happy? Why?
This is a timely question as, just yesterday while out walking my dog, I gave this very thing a lot of thought after witnessing something in nature. After we arrived back home, I actually wrote out a list.
I’ll be very transparent and share it with you here:
Being in the studio working on music.
Travel….especially internationally.
Hotel Bars & Speakeasies.
Going on truly interesting dates.
Great conversations.
Night drives on the interstate.
Creative pursuits like songwriting, art, graphic design.
Swimming in the ocean.
Watching Boxing matches. Hoping to attend soon.
Shopping for bargains.
Designing my living spaces.
Imagining brand ideas & creating companies.
Being a “girl dad”.
Dressing well.
Milkshakes & great, quality ice cream.
Learning new things.
Going to live concerts.
Visiting aquariums, art galleries, and museums.
Trying new restaurants & bars.
Going to lectures.
Going to the movies – especially IMAX.
Collecting wines & spirits.
Speaking on panels.
Being outside.
Walking on the beltline in Atlanta.
Going to Haunted Houses & watching horror movies.
The Christmas season.
Being on tour & performing on stage.
Giving solid advice.
Conversations with my mom. I have to fix this.
Visiting NYC & LA.
Pitching business ideas.
Waterfront restaurants.
Spending time in a gym I enjoy.
Exploring bookstores.
Having my own office space.
Driving through wealthy neighboorhoods.
Riding on boats in the ocean and taking cruises.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At this point in my life, I have reached a point of quite a bit of reflection. I think that’s due to recently coming to yet another crossroads that is leading to another new and exciting phase of my journey.
My art, at this point, is sans boundaries: I am a recording artist. I am a writer | author. I am a owner of a few clothing brand concepts. I am writing my first children’s book and graphic novel. I am a songwriter. I am a DJ business coach and public speaker.
Notice how each of those statements is definitive and absolute. That is something I have learned over the years of building my own and chasing my passions. One of the most important practices was to remove the phrase “I’m trying” or “I want to”. It’s either I’m doing it or I’m not. Breaking that habit was not easy but it has absolutely fed and informed by success later in my career.
I am unique because I’m committed to only doing the things that I am truly moved by, interested in, and that are authentic to me as an individual. I don’t want to follow trends or go along with group think.
Finally, what I am commited to sharing with the world for the balance of my walk is a transparent, very human journey of a dreamer: wins, warts, and all.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love questions like this! Let’s go Sunday to Saturday:
Sunday afternoon, we are spending MOST of the day at the place I’ve visited more than any other attraction in Atlanta, The Georgia Aquarium. That place is a stalwart of my dating playbook.. If you are going out with me, you are going to go -atch some fish….haha.
Monday, we are going to catch breakfast at The Flying Buiscuit Cafe in Midtown. Next, weather permitting, we are going to take an after-meal stroll in Piedmont Park. Perfect spot for conversation and connecting. Afterwards, we’d hop in the car and just go for a mobile tour around the town. There are some great neighborhoods to explore like Inman Park, Virginia Highlands, Lil Five Points, Edgewood, etc. I truly enjoy sharing these areas with people for the first time. Afterwards, dinner & drinks at Murphy’s in the Highlands is a perfect end to the evening.
Tuesday, it’s Day Trip time. It’s a short drive to Winder, GA to spend the day at Chateau Elan. Tour of the winery, spa day, etc. This is an all-day affair if left up to me.
Wednesday, it’s breakfast in with me on the grill getting my “Marcus Graham” on. Then, off to Ponce City Market for shopping and lunch at Nine Mile Station. Afterwards, exlporation of the Beltline is a must. That areas has been my favorite since it was created. It has a fantastic engery that feels like other large cities around the country. I can stay out here until sundown, man.
Thursday, it’s exploration of Streets of Buckhead. Lunch & Shopping. After a break back at the house, it’s off to the overlook at the Sundial overlook for dessert & drinks at the bar. If you know, you know.
Friday, it’s head up 400 North to Avalon for a one-night stay-cation at The Hotel at Avalon. The day would start with breakfast at Chik-fil-A (judge away…I don’t care..lol). Then after a bit of purusing at the shops, a matinee movie at AMC is a must. Next, a quick ride over to Winward for a walk on the trail, Then, back to the hotel to chill until the evening. Once the sun goes down, it’s down to Southside Kitchen for dinner and drinks. Finally, a quick stroll down to Intermezzo for dessert.
Finally, after check out on Saturday morning, it’s back into the city to do a bit of window-shopping and hanging out in Midtown. No itinerary…just going with the flow. Catch dinner at Establishment on Peachtree…then to wrap the week, one of my favorite things: Saturday night at the Clermont Lounge. Real ones get it.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This was a tough one….at first. Then, as I reflected on my life and career, the one constant who has been there for encouragement and love has been my mom.
No matter what, she has stood in the gap and been there. Even when I may not have deserved her grace as much.
The shoutout goes to the ONLY choice: My mother.
