We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Kamm and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ Kamm, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was nervous. I first knew I wanted to dj when I was 16 years old. My cousin was a dj and I would watch and listen to him and i was so intrigued by his skills that it made me want to start Djing as well. I started taking it seriously when I was around 22 years old and I was nervous, but I knew this was what I wanted to do. I knew That there were things I had to learn for myself all while learning from other DJs as well. I knew some family and friends wouldn’t take it seriously, but I did what I was passionate about.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I remember the first time I had to DJ somewhere. It was in Savannah, Georgia and it was for OrangeCrush and I couldn’t get my board to work. I was having some of the worst technical difficulties. Then when I was able to get my board to work, my computer kept freezing up while the song was playing and I just remember almost having a panic attack (lol). I’ve learned a lot since then, and I try to keep as calm as possible now when I have technical issues. When I started, my cousin lived in New Jersey, so I didn’t have a lot of hands on teaching, so I taught myself. I would watch other DJs and listen to their blends and how they would mix certain songs and watch their hand movements, and I would go home and practice it. I used to stay up for hours in the night practicing in my bedroom.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When anybody comes to visit me in Valdosta, the first place I always take them to is Big Nicks. It’s this soul food spot that is almost heavenly. I mean the best collard greens, Mac and cheese, and turkey legs you’ll get in Valdosta. Then of course we would go out to one of the nicest spots downtown Valdosta, D’truth Nightclub. They have hookahs, great music and DJs, and serving steak and lobster until 1 am. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a big shoutout to my biggest supporter, my mother. She has supported me since the day I walked in her bedroom and told her I wanted to be a DJ. I was a kid and had no idea about Djing at all, but she was like “ok! Do it!” A mother’s support is everything. My cousin, DJ cheese, for inspiring me to become a great DJ. DJ Mike Fresh & DJ A Rod (Hittquad DJs) for trusting me and giving me my first chance at Djing and my significant other (who is also a DJ) with challenging me to become a better DJ.
