We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Croft and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
How I came up with my business was when growing up I saw myself acting as different types of characters and dressing up as them. I really enjoy the creativity and the arts of being someone different and making and drawing things. One day I decided to become a video game character from a very popular video game franchise and I self taught myself how to hand make the costumes from scratch using different types of materials. I then created a stage name for myself that relates to who I am and also the character I was portraying. I created a platform for myself shortly after that and begin to create costumes and portraying a wide variety of characters from across superhero comics, video games, and anime. I have build my business as a costume artist, performance artist, and professional cosplayer.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art consist of hand making costumes from scratch using different types of materials to achieve that goal. I am self taught in what I do! What sets me apart from others is I love doing genderbend cosplays (meaning) cosplaying as a character but of a different s*x. For example I am most known for my male version (genderbend) Lara Croft cosplay who is a character who is British and is a female character. I break the mold in cosplay by showing people that they do not have to dress up or cosplay as one dimensional characters tied to their skin color or s*x because cosplay is art and art is subjective and fun and it should be allowed to be creative. I would say I got to where I am today because of that journey of creating a lot of genderbend male characters of female characters from video games, comics, and anime. I overcome challenges by not becoming fearful of the content I put out and knowing I have a purpose of why I do what I do! I have learned to be myself in costuming and never try to compare myself to another artist or cosplayer because everybody shoes fit differently and comparing yourself is like comparing apples to oranges. I am on my own journey and I am proud of that. What I want the world to know about me is I stand for equality and inclusion and I am be advocate about everyone getting along no matter their ethnicity, s*x, se*ual orientation, or background because we are all the same: Homo Sapiens (Humans Beings).

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would say some pretty cool places to check out in Atlanta to get the best drinks and music I would say Blakes in midtown, Mary’s, the Bar Strip in Buckhead, and some local restaurants/ bars in the surrounding city areas. To eat at I would definitely recommend Korean BBQ and Hot Pot outside the perimeter of Atlanta they have some of the best and authentic Asian cuisines in the east coast. The best places to go side seeing and to hang out would be the Grand Canyons in Georgia, Tallulah Falls in upstate Georgia, Piedmont Park, and I would definitely say rooftop events that get hosted around the Atlanta city areas a lot.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shoutout and credit to some of my main photographers who has supported me in the process of what I have created: Tonny Caicedo and Chrysander Mandragora. I also want to give credit to all of my cosplay friends from the Atlanta area, Los Angeles area, and at other conventions that I have attend for encouraging me so much!
