We had the good fortune of connecting with Dion Reid and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dion, what do you attribute your success to?
I would say the most important factor behind my success is the support of my close friends and family to pursue something in the art world that makes me feel more creative and fulfilled. Also the doubters who would tell me i would never accomplish my goals in photography were a factor in pushing me to prove them wrong.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
When I decided to pursue photography, I was told by others that I would never make any money or be recognized. It was never about making money. It was about having my brand out there and showcasing my strengths in photography. I knew when I was a teenager that I had an eye for creating art behind the lens. Being self taught, I’ve educated myself in the true art and foundation of becoming a creative. Building my craft has not only set me apart from others, but it allowed me to discover my own aesthetic which lead me to have my work featured in several publications and published two coffee table books.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Columbus, Georgia has so much to offer. I would start with going to Uptown to stroll on the Riverwalk, zip-line across the Chattahoochee River and enjoy some whitewater rafting. Of course I would have my camera with me so I could capture the experience and squeeze in a mini shoot. We would also check out the local businesses and restaurants. We would visit my favorite restaurant, The Black Cow for some delicious chicken and waffles. I love art so we would have to visit the Columbus Museum which provides an opportunity to learn about the rich history and influence of local artists.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First I would say my late grandmother. She was my biggest cheerleader. Whenever I achieved something great she was the first person I’d call. She motivated me to be different, make an impact and never give up. She always told me, ‘Build Your Legacy’ and I take that to heart every day. Second, my parents for accepting my decision to do something outside of my comfort zone. They always encouraged me to be determined and never allow people to negatively influence my ability to move forward and be successful.
