We had the good fortune of connecting with Dion Johnson Sr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dion, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
LawnSpa heavily devotes its energy to giving back to the community through various ways, including partnering with Project Evergreen, an organization that offers free lawn care for military families.

At LawnSpa we realize giving back through acts of kindness is one of our most important, humbling, and fulfilling responsibilities. One of my favorite quotes by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Is, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” We strive to live up to this moto daily.
Another service we’re proud to offer the community is providing free landscape services for a five single mother’s each landscaping season.
In addition to offering free landscape services, LawnSpa donates clothes, canned goods, and perishable food items to local women’s shelters and food banks.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In 2015, I was working as a campus director of a truck driving school. During that time, I felt like there was something missing. Deep down, I knew that I wanted more for my family and myself. So, my wife and I took a leap of faith and started LawnSpa with only two push lawn mowers.

In the beginning, I would go door to door asking if people wanted their lawn serviced. My brother Joshua and I would mow every afternoon and all Saturday and Sunday on my days off. We worked hard to build our clientele back then, and when I lost my job, we started mowing seven days a week, sunup to sundown.
Our hard work ultimately paid off: LawnSpa is now a full-service Commercial and Residential landscaping company with an expert team that provides hundreds of clients in Metro Atlanta with all-inclusive outdoor maintenance.
LawnSpa offers a free lawn analysis to clients that want to improve their property’s curb appeal. In particular, licensed arborist visit the home, do an assessment, and create customized plans to best meet a client’s needs. LawnSpa can handle all your outdoor needs from A to Z.
As successful as LawnSpa is now, our company hasn’t been without struggles.
During our third year of operation,  I injured my shoulder and eye badly enough they’ll require surgery at some point, my trailer and equipment were stolen, and we lost our biggest commercial client at the time. As a result I had to work three jobs a day during the fall and winter to keep our company alive.
Hardship and setbacks will show you what you’re made of. I learned invaluable lessons about perseverance, grit, family, and faith through the difficulties we experienced.
Fortunately, my family is always here to back me up. My wife, Daphne Johnson, handles our company’s payroll, compliance, and bookkeeping. Our youngest daughter’s, Dakota and Zoe, take photos at work with me during summertime. Our oldest daughter, Deanna works on social media marketing. My parents, Bernard Johnson Sr. and Debra Johnson, have handed out flyers and business cards.
I am a living testament to God’s grace and favor through life’s storms.  LawnSpa’s journey has not always been easy. As a result of our hard work, dedication, and commitment to quality service,  we’ve been awarded landscaping contracts in Texas, Florida,  and North Carolina for Spring 2022.
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Proverbs 13:22: “A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children.” My advice to anyone is to stop complaining and do the work. The life, relationship, business, or job you want must be earned. Your efforts today impact future generations. You can either get paid for decisions you made years ago, or pay for decisions you made years ago. Choose wisely

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is filled with civil rights history, so I suggest visiting the Apex Museum, Martin Luther King Jr. Center, and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. If you like soul food, I strongly suggest Paschal’s and Busy Bee Cafe.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To my supportive, beautiful, and intelligent Queen Daphne D. Johnson,  a.k.a. Queen Shinny: thank you for standing by me through the good and bad days. You wear dual hats and your work behind scenes allows me to devote so much time to our company. I can’t thank you enough for being such a blessing to my life. You’re a great mother and wonderful wife. I honestly don’t know where I’d be without you, and I’m forever grateful that you are my wife. Love you always.

To my kids, Deanna, Dakota, Zoe, and Dion II: you are my greatest pride and motivation! LawnSpa is being built for you and future generations of our family. Daddy loves you.
To my parents,  Bernard Johnson Sr. and Debra Johnson: thank you for being such great parents. You instilled the importance of faith, family, and integrity. My tireless work ethic is from my father and entrepreneurial spirit is from my mom. I couldn’t ask for better parents, and I love you both.
To my brother Joshua Johnson: there are no words to describe what you’ve meant to our company’s success. You worked tirelessly with me from day one to get us here, and I couldn’t have survived in the beginning without your help. Love you, Bro.
To my brother Bernard Johnson Jr.: thank you for being my best friend from day one. I appreciate your advice and support. Love you.
To my mentor and friend Rick Wylie Jr.: thanks for being a sounding board on issues ranging from employees to strategic planning. I truly appreciate you. Love you.
To my in-laws Eric Edge and Gail Edge: thank you for giving me my 1st truck to start LawnSpa. Love you.
Lastly, I want to take the time to thank all our past and present clients, staff, family, and friends who share, like, and promote LawnSpa. Thank you for your business and encouraging words.
