We had the good fortune of connecting with Diamond Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diamond, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because I like to come up with ideas and create. I have always been creative way before I had my daughter. I love to decorate… especially party decor. I have always made favors and flavor boxes for my family members parties ever since I could remember. Once I decided to move to a new city and take on a job that paid less money, I knew I needed to find an extra income. I was asked if I knew how to make candied apples by an employer and I took off from there. After that first order, I knew I was going to be a treat maker. I came up with the business name “A Diam A Dozen” because my name is Diamond and I would be selling treats by the dozen. The name came from a song that was on the radio when I was on my way to deliver the order because it mentioned a dime a dozen. From that day on, I began working on samples trying out different items to put on my menu. I then made business cards to hand out, made my website, an Instagram and did my LLC. Everything happened quick. I was making money in my sleep and I loved it. I was always creative so this gave me the opportunity to express that creativity in my work. Every order will be different even though I’ve done the same theme at least 5 times in my career.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is baking and treat making. I make cupcakes, pound cakes, praline candy, chocolate covered treats, apples and more. I am also learning how to bake/decorate cakes. The thing that sets me apart is my ability to learn new skills and apply them to my business. I stay up until about 3am watching YouTube tutorials and writing down instructions, ordering products and molds, etc. I am highly motivated when it comes to my craft. I am most excited about the release of my new products coming in November 2021. I’m planning to drop a line for my birthday/Black Friday including silicon mats, spatulas, bling sticks, glitters, molds and more. These are things that I use everyday when I’m preparing my orders. Instead of other treat makers going on 3-4 different websites to find what they need, they can go directly to my site and order through me. Through hard work, dedication and motivation, I built my clientele and brand. Honesty, it took about a year to get where I am today. It was really hard to find clients during the pandemic. I was only making about $20-$50 a month and was ready to give up every week when I didn’t have any clients. It was not always easy during this time. It has gotten better since the world opened back up. Especially once I went back to work. I work at a school so I was able to bring samples in to the teachers and since then, I have been booked every weekend doing 3 or more orders. I’m so grateful for that. Along the way I learned not to give up and to keep pushing towards my dream because it’s all going to pay off one day. I plan on mastering this cake decorating and taking everything else off of my menu completely to focus on that. I love watching Cake Wars on Netflix and food network seeing these creative artist bake extreme cakes. I want the world to know my name. In the next 3-5 years my goal is to have my own shop and be featured in at least 1 cake competition on television. I want to be known. I want my work to speak for me.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend was visiting me here, I would take her to eat at Ms. Icey’s, The Brownstone, Atlanta Breakfast Club, Nouveau Bar and Grill, Fin and Feather’s, and we’d take a scroll down to Edgewood for good music and drinks. I would definitely go to Krab Queens or Juicy Crab for a nice vibe and good seafood since we are from New Orleans. I would also take her to the Trap Museum, Atlantic Station, Skyview Atlanta and I’ve been dying to get to this museum that I follow on Instagram called Gurl Mobb museum. All of these places named are fun and exciting and we love a good meal with cocktails.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My aunt Trenese Johnson and my friend Imani definitely deserve a shout out because they push me to my limits and always mention my name in a room full of opportunities.
