We had the good fortune of connecting with Dexter Cameron and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dexter, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
You know how you have that feeling that you were born to do something? That’s how I feel about real estate. I’ve worked in financial services and telecom/technology for 19 years. After my 3rd layoff, I’m like, ‘you know, this isn’t what I want to do anymore”. I was tired of being held by the “golden handcuffs” and chasing the next role where some company was looking for a “rockstar” to catapult sales on their channel team. I had to sit with myself and really dig into what I felt in my spirit; it wasn’t telecom & technology. It was real estate. As child I was also drawn to architecture and real estate. My thought was, “follow your true joy”. Here I am years later loving what I do, learning and growing, and helping others achieve homeownership in the process. This is what I feel like I was born to do.

What should our readers know about your business?
People think real estate is easy; like all we do is open doors, show homes, drink champagne, and shop. This couldn’t be further from the truth which is why most folks that get into real estate, get out in the first 3-5 years. As I stated before, because I feel this is what I was put here to do, it shows in the way I show up for my clients. It shows in the care I put forth when you’re making one of the largest, most emotional purchases of your life. Genuine concern and compassion for the people and how my services could impact their lives is what helped me get to where I am today. Although I am part of Indigo Road Realty by Egypt Sherrod, I am my own brand which she always reinforces with; “you are a brand within a brand”. That has led me to incorporate my own real estate company; Cameron Dexter Real Estate Group. This is what I am the most proud of at the moment and the most excited about.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spots in the city; The High for a little art; Eclipse di Luna, Echo Lounge. If its the last weekend of the month, maybe The Happier Hour @ Rocksteady, stroll on the Beltline, brunch at Folk Art in Hapeville, Lee + White in the West End, or the Atlanta Utility Works in East Point. The possibilities are endless.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my entire village; my parents, my brother and sisters, my partner, and my lifelong friends who all support me, uplift me, encourage me, correct me, and protect me. Without them, the moments of doubt would’ve created a completely different outcome; a different trajectory.
