We had the good fortune of connecting with Dewayne Bontrager and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dewayne, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
1. Its always better to have a niche so you have to be able to re-invent yourself. We have done that many times. When you hop on the latest trend, it eventually gets watered down and profits diminish. We started out as desktop publishers, then websites, then interactive, then trade shows interfaces, currently video/animation and product development. 2. As a service company, if you’re not willing to hire employees, you’re only making money when you’re working. And it is hard to make your company sellable if you are the business. We have enjoyed not being responsible for employees looking back, the business hasn’t grown like it could have.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For the past 13 years, one of our passions has been storytelling through short films. We have written/produced/filmed/edited over 25 short films. However, none have made us a dime – in fact they have cost our company 1,000’s of dollars & hours. But we love it!. 90% of our films have sprouted with an idea that we have never seen before in film. From creating camera rigs to filming techniques to visual effects to how the story is told. Examples:
“Whatever will be…” We developed a patented rig that allowed 3 cameras to rotate around a poker game without seeing the other cameras – we were able to create a very unique split screen experience.
“Plan B” Is a story within a story. The audience watching a couple eating in a diner, soon finds out that what’s really happening is what’s in the window behind them.
“Shadows of Life” – Tells the story of one mans journey through life – told silently and through nothing but silhouettes.
“Disclosure” introduces what we call “Ultra Wide Screen” Where elements from the scene extend beyond the film borders.
We have won countless awards – mostly in Visual effects and Special Effects. Our biggest achievement to date was being asked to represent the Sunscreen Film Festival at the Cannes Film Festival with our film “The Bridge” – it showed in a theater to a sold out crowd. Very proud moment for us.
Although not lucrative, we are not quitting until we make a feature.

My twin brother, Lawayne. Without his 20 year partnership, I could not have diversified my career as easily. Our competitiveness has always elevated our deliverables. We have been able to split the responsibilities, workload and costs of our company investments,
