We had the good fortune of connecting with Destiny Turner and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Destiny, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic career because I feel the safest, and yet, the most daring on stage. The stage is my home. It’s where I’m the most comfortable. I’m more confident talking to thousands on a stage than talking to a stranger in the grocery store. I feel that healing and freedom are present when I’m on stage. I get to help people through whatever they’re going through. And it comes naturally. It’s a gift from God, and for that, I am eternally grateful. I continue to do it because I live for seeing smiling faces and people dancing and enjoying themselves after a long day’s work. I do it because it is simply who I am!Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe what sets me apart is my desire to continuously re-invent myself. I constantly change aspects of the show, creative concepts, and even the genre of music that I create. I’m most proud that I haven’t given up. I’ve faced many challenges like losing an entire work of art a week before it was due to release. Soul crushing to say the least, but I used it as motivation to push harder. To get to where I am today has taken hard work. However, I’m allowing myself grace to be human and learn from every experience. I’m learning not to rush past the building part of the process because that’s when your character is made. I’ve wanted to reach the highlight of this journey for so long and I found I was skipping past the good part. I’ve begun to slow down and take things one day at a time. Growing up always on the rush conditioned me to rush through life. I’m just now beginning to enjoy the full process. I want the world to know that if I can do it, you can too. Use your obstacles as motivation to come back harder next time. And take breaks when needed but please, never give up!Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For starters, let’s stay at the Renaissance Hotel because it’s in the heart of downtown Montgomery. Aight boom! Monday, we’re going to Euphoria to enjoy drinks and a chill vibe. Tuesday, we’re doing a spa day. Massages at Hands on Healing. Facials and waxing and hair and hot tubs. All that good stuff at the hotel. Wednesday, we’re going to New Moon for live music and great wings. Thursday, we’ll start with walking downtown and exploring all of the history that Montgomery has to offer. Equal Justice Initiative. Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. Rosa Parks Museum. Arts Museum. Then, down to Commerce Beerworks for jazz music by AJBF and great drinks. We may slide next door to the Aviator or Alley Bar to finish the night off. Friday and Saturday night, we’re going to my home stage of BB King’s Blues club to hear great live music and have a wonderful dining experience. Might slip to Itta Bena upstairs to get some lobster bisque soup. Yum! And finish the night off by hitting the jackpot in the Windcreek casino! Sunday, we’re giving tithes from the jackpot (forgive us Lord). And finishing the week off with a movie at the movie theater. And if you’re still in the mood for live music, there’s always someone playing around town.Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family: my mother and brother. They’re always there for me. I love the support we give to each other. I’d like to especially highlight my mother. She has sacrificed so much for me to be where I am today. I’m not sure I’ll ever know the strength that she possesses but I’d like to think that it’s infinite. She corrects me with grace and wisdom and has taught me to remember to balance myself in life. I believe that will carry me through anything I encounter on this journey.
