We had the good fortune of connecting with Destine Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Destine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Originally, I thought this would be an amazing opportunity to contribute to our family within reasonable hours while my children were at school. I could easily clean a couple houses before they got out and didn’t have to worry about the stress of finding a sitter or working hours that kept me away from them.
I also considered how low cost of a startup that a cleaning business would be. I already had everything I needed to clean my own home so it wasn’t much of an investment for me to start up my business. A huge perk to the cleaning industry. Very easy startup!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I believe what sets our business apart from others is the individuality that we provide for each client. Each cleaning job is completely customized to our clients and we strive to provide a one hundred percent judgement free zone at all times.
The growth that we have seen in just two years is monumental. We started out as just a one man show with me cleaning on the side to now having a five person crew tackling multiple properties a day. Our clientele has more than tripled since we began and it amazes me at the messages and inquiries that come in daily.
It definitely wasn’t an easy beginning and it is easy to feel discouraged with the fluctuation of business in this industry. There is also a large amount of people in the area doing the exact same thing as you. It’s hard to set yourself apart and make your business stand out but somehow we achieved just that.
Some of the few lessons that I’ve learned along the way are to stay positive and take everything with a grain of salt. Some people are impossible to please and that is not a reflection of your work. Also, it’s not about the jobs you say yes to, it’s about what you say no to. It’s completely okay to say no. Don’t overload yourself and take those much needed off days. If someone cancels, take it as a blessing in disguise and take a nap instead.. or in my case, catch up on my own house.
I would like everyone to know that mental health played a huge part in the startup of this business for me. I was a recovering mother from postpartum depression with a one year old. I was suffering from heavy anxiety and bouts of depression. Cleaning gave me a purpose and made me feel helpful to someone again. My family made me feel that, but it felt rewarding to watch other people lives fall into place with my help. My clients have become a huge support system in my life and I am grateful for every friendship that has come from starting this business.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would most definitely take a trip to the blue ridge mountains to rent out a cabin for the week. We would stop at Chattahoochee Pizza kitchen for a delicious Greek salad and a pepperoni pizza, maybe a drink or two. Stop by the many local, mom & pop produce stands along the way to grab some fresh fruits and vegetables.. probably some boiled peanuts as well. We would enjoy the rest of the week in solitude full of R&R.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate this to my fiancé. I really wouldn’t be where I am in this lifetime without him. I was able to be a stay at home mom for a few years and enjoy that important one on one time with my youngest daughter that I didn’t get to experience with my other children. I was so used to being a busy-body and working in the fast-paced restaurant industry. It felt so good to find someone that just wanted to nurture me and my children while he brought home the bacon. Without him, my business would never have grown to the lengths it has now. He works beside me full-time now and I couldn’t be more proud to have a better business partner.
