Meet Destin Howard | Poet

We had the good fortune of connecting with Destin Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Destin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided to pursue a career in poetry because it’s something I know I’m good at and that I can be competitive with. As far as my writing goes I feel that my lyricism has evolved a lot especially within the last 4 years when I decided to take it serious. I write and perform spoken word poetry because it makes me feel good I think it’s the easiest way for me to express my self.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So right now I have a book out on Amazon it’s $9.00. It’s called Manifest a collection of poems by Destin Howard. The book consist of poems about my childhood, racism, sexuality, and most importantly self love. I wrote the book as a introduction to who I am to the world as a poet. I wrote the book not only for my self but to show others that they can create or “Manifest” whatever they want in there lives if they really work for it. Writing it was a little challenging since I self published however having control was nice. I also started recording music this year as well hopefully I’ll have some future projects “EP” come out in April. But in both the music and poetry my goal is for people to learn something or even just to make you think and ask the questions that society is scared to talk about. No matter how difficult. I think that’s the beautiful thing about poetry is that it helps see things from new perspectives.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m big on food and I’m currently in Savannah Ga so the majority would prolly be good based. So my favorite restaurant is Savannah is this place called trailer parks. So we’d definitely go there we’d go out to Bar Bar one night and get Savannah Slammers and bar hop to somewhere else. One day we would also probably end up skating at Star Castle. There’s a really fun place to eat outside called star land yard they tend to have open mics that I’ve performed at In the past and the food trucks are usually pretty good

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
WORD / Way of Real Discovery is organization on Savannah State University campus that serves as a collaboration of artist. I joined my freshman year. If it wasn’t for the people in this organization I wouldn’t be as comfortable as I am now on stage or with speaking in front of people. They really broke me out of my shell and helped stand firm and be confident in my talents. WORD is more than just a club it’s a family. We share our stories / experiences to help each other network and grow.
