We had the good fortune of connecting with D’Essence Vaughn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi D’Essence, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business was something I never thought of doing on a serious note, until Covid -19 pandemic came and the lost of my mother all in the same year. In this hard time of 2020 I wanted a hobby that would take my mind off the hard days and to motivate me to be something I never dreamed of,… so I decided to start my body scrubs line called The Nautica Effect which is a coed sugar/ salt based natural scrub for all skin types.
What should our readers know about your business?
The Nautica Effect started out as me trying making a name for myself to be more in life and be proud of myself but to also make a difference. I created my own sugar scrubs starting in November 2020 shorty after my mom’s passing. I didn’t know anything about my starting my own business so I looked to peers, YouTube, tik tok and business creators for help or a step in to what it really takes to have n grow your own business. Overtime now that I’m 2 years in my business staying consistent and not being afraid to talk to people about your business was my biggest lesson. And it’s expensive to keep your business a float which I shorty realized but my business is doing better every year so I’m grateful.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a travel person so I love to experience new restaurants, drinks, scenery, and people. But here in Atlanta I would definitely take them to get some famous down south wings, Roswell mill waterfall, and a night out at bonfire ATL.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to recognize my grandparents for always being there, pushing me on the right track, and being my rock when I feel I have nobody. My best friend Danielle because she is always right on time when I need her
