We had the good fortune of connecting with DeShawn Bullard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeShawn, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor behind my success and the success of my brand is remaining focused on why I started the brand and what my brand was designed to do for my specific target market. I started my brand in 1998 before social media, however when social media arrived on the scene, it became very hard to focus on what my brand’s intentions were versus looking at other brands and comparing my brand to theirs.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
NouriTress Hair Products is a hair rejuvenation and damaged hair repair treatment system, designed to address the hair rehabilitation needs of the multicultural client. Our hair anti-aging products are formulated with a DHT Blocker and clinically proven ingredients that address problems for customers who experience hair thinning, breakage, shedding or hair loss. NouriTress products work from the inside out, starting with building strand development internally and next hair and scalp treatment externally to begin a healthy hair transformation! Today with over 5,000,000 tablets sold, women & men who have used the products have provided consistent testimonials and evidence of performance.

What sets us apart from other brands is that we are not just selling a product, we are also providing hair services at our Salon & Hair Clinic location to women who are actually experiencing certain hair problems. We get the opportunity to provide real time expert advice and hair restoration services to women who trust us with their hair.

What I am most proud of is that we have created a brand structure that has allowed our brand of products to have graced the shelves of major retail stores such as Walmart, Walgreens, Target and JCPenney to name a few. We are also proud that we have created a safe place for women to come and get hair healing from our Salon & Hair Clinic all while partnering with other salon professionals across the country to offer the same service in their salon thus assisting with economic development growth in the salon community.

My 25-year business journey has not been an easy one at all! Changes in the industry over these 25 years, almost caused us to shut down however I had to recalibrate and change with the time. I took classes to learn about social media marketing and I participated in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program to focus in on my business model and opportunities for growth. I overcame these challenges by focusing solely on what the goal of my business was in the midst of the noise. I had to go back and visit the soul of my business and why it exists.

The biggest lesson I learned over the years is that you have to stay committed to your brands intentions no matter what others may think about your brand on your behalf! I knew why I started my brand and I had to go back to my original intention. Although times had changed, my brand intentions had not changed, I just had to use the new tools available to continue the mission which was to help each client experience beautiful hair again!

What I want the world to know about me and my brand story is that we are committed to help women feel good about themselves! In the African American community, a large portion of this starts at the top, the crown where their hair is located. If her hair is gorgeous, she feels better about herself and can take on any obstacle or challenge. As a Board Certified Licensed Cosmetologist, Certified Trichologist and Hair Loss Specialist, I am committed to helping women achieve healthy beautiful hair through our clinically proven brand of NouriTress Hair Products and by providing hair restoration and treatment services at our NouriTress Salon & Hair Clinic.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Because I work a lot, I need a lot of rest. When my friends come to town, I take them to my favorite restaurant, Houston’s on West Paces Ferry in Atlanta and next we are off to some spa services.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a couple of people I would like to shout out! The first would be Cyrus Jackson. I worked for his company before I started my brand, and he was instrumental in guiding me on how to develop the products in my brand. The second person I would like to shout out is Elsie Cardell. Elsie was very instrumental in helping understand pricing strategies for retail as well as she guided me on how to get my products in major retail stores such as JCPenney and Walgreens.
