We had the good fortune of connecting with Derricko Swink and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derricko, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career because I’ve always been the type of person to express myself out loud. As a self-proclaimed ambivert, I enjoy all the things that give me peace and harmony but also love having the freedom to be as creative as I want to be without fear. To be honest, it’s almost as if creativity found me and pushed me to become who I am today. One of my greatest accomplishments has been developing our marketing and brand design powerhouse known as The Swink Agency.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is everything to me! It is how I express myself and being able to create something real from just a thought has always intrigued me. When I look back at my journey, I am most proud of the lessons I’ve learned along the way that gave me the confidence to step out and know that I could make a real impact in the world with my art. I have had my share of challenges along the way, but I’ve always been persistent in making the best out of each situation and try to learn from each mistake. Some of the key lessons I’ve learned along the way have been patience and timing. I want the world to know that my story of struggle and triumph is real, but that I overcame through hard work and dedication.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So Atlanta is all about the southern glitz and glam and some of my favorite places to frequent are nothing short of that. For starters, we could go grab bite to eat at Kobe’s Steakhouse. It is one of my favorite hibachi restaurants in the city or we could go to Island Vibes and get a real taste of Jamaican cuisine. Another good hang out spot I would take them is Top Golf. Top Golf is like the best experience you never knew you needed when hanging out with friends. And last, if they’re really seeking a thrill with a great view of Atlanta, then we’d definitely go check out SkyView.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely have to shoutout and give credit to my wife, Sandra, for where I am today. She is the one person who pushed me to get a degree in design before I could even imagine having such a career. She’s also been there every step of the way from when I first started out as a self-taught graphic designer to now being a creative director.
