We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Mullins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
Good question! My favorite quote is by Dolly Parton, ” Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” I’ve always been a story teller and always had a huge imagination. I could always visualize or picture an idea in my mind. Which got me through a lot tough times and experiences over the years.. It’s very easy to throw your hands in the air and say I’m done. Maybe money issues, a car that doesn’t work right, or family issues. That being said you have to pick yourself out of the dirt, just because plan A didn’t work there is always a plan B. You have to get really good at forgetting and forgiving yourself for mistakes and move past it. Forgive other people for maybe wasting your time. In conclusion you have to motivate yourself everyday, understand that every idea or project may not work out, but knowing in your heart that one will. And knowing that one will work out motivates me everyday.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m producing and directing a feature film in August called The Warrior, it’s based on a true story of my battle with cancer and the effects it had on my family in the 1980s. I’m proud of the film in many ways, I’m proud that it will tell my story, I’m proud that hopefully it will give people hope and encouragement through very tough times and give people strength. I’m originally from Michigan and once i got my schooling completed I wanted to create films for a living. So I moved to Los Angeles and was there for 10 years. I did whatever I could to get on set so I could learn from the best. The hardest part is trying to humble yourself and maybe do a job that isn’t glamorous, but the most important thing to remember it only takes one person to think your good at what you do so grab the ball and run with it. What I want the world to know about me and my brand is I’m going to give you everything I’ve got, passion about telling stories, and realism because of all the life experiences I’m going to be honest, truthful, heartfelt, and never give up because the story has to be told and I hope I’m there to experience it with you.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother is my inspiration everyday, She passed in 1993 of cancer when I was 15. She was that rare right and left brain person who could write, paint, sew, glue, cut and then turn around and be the top of her class at IT Tech, she is my hero who gives me the courage and strength to just go for it.
