We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Chapman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, how do you think about risk?
I feel like I am taking risks all the time. Both in my personal life and career. In my mind, risk is not synonymous with inevitability; it’s only the potential for something unfavorable to happen. I guess that makes me feel a little more in control. My goal is to take the most calculated risk. Ill typically pause and carefully assess a situation or opportunity before making any decisions. When I do that, it reminds me that regardless of the eventual outcome, I know I’ve taken the necessary time for introspection.

Having said that, I also recognize that there are instances in life where it’s better to opt for a more cautious approach. I tend to lean towards a safer course of action when it comes to making decisions for others. Right now it’s with my adventurous two-year-old son. He’s quite the risk-taker for his age, and sometimes, I find myself faced with deciding whether to intervene or let him explore the boundaries. This experience has taught me that there are instances when stepping in and playing it safe for him is the right choice, while at other times, it’s even more beneficial to let him embrace the risk and the valuable, lesson that comes with it!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be immersed in the dynamic and ever-evolving worlds of creativity and entertainment. Currently, as an entrepreneur and a devoted single dad, my life is a incredible juggling act comprising three significant ventures, each bringing its own flavor to my journey. Alongside these, I also indulge in a couple of side hustles that not only keep me afloat but also add to my happiness.

I’ll break it down for you: I serve as a content specialist at Realkit, a prominent real estate media company. On top of that, I co-own and operate DRCMedia, a business dedicated to content creation. And if that’s not enough, I’m also a professional singer and musician – be sure to follow me for updates on my shows over at @derrick.chapman.(Shameless Plug)
When the weekend rolls around, you can often find me dishing out some steak delights or singing by the bar at the esteemed 101 Steakhouse in Vinings Georgia – it’s definitely worth checking out!

Now, before you start thinking I’ve got it all figured out and that I’m precisely where I want to be, let me debunk that myth. There are days when I wake up, and im looking at myself wondering, “What am I actually doing with my life?” But in those moments of self-doubt, I swiftly remind myself of my overarching goal and the path I’m traversing to achieve it.

I have a background in performing arts and hospitality, so the traditional 9-to-5 job never quite aligned with my aspirations. I’ve always harbored a deep-seated love for the idea of creating my own opportunities and having the flexibility to nurture and grow my career from scratch. My journey took me to the bustling streets of New York City when I was just 18, where I pursued my education and was fortunate enough to stumble upon some incredible job opportunities after graduating.

Those experiences around the world exposed me to various career paths within the entertainment and creative industries. Admittedly, the road was not always smooth; (very very very bumpy at times.. like.. 10 foot potholes bumpy).
I encountered numerous challenges and faced some tough decisions along the way. However, these trials and tribulations ultimately led me to where I stand today, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

In 2022 I made the decision to return from my overseas contract to Atlanta to continue pursuing my career aspirations and, most importantly, to embrace my role as a father to my wonderful 2-year-old son. Every step I took prior to being in Atlanta was instrumental in carving out a career trajectory that aligns with my ultimate goal of attaining both financial and spiritual freedom.

I’m thankful for the hurdles and success that have come my way and for those that await me, as each one presents an opportunity to grow and set an example for my son and the people around me. If there’s one message I want to share with the world, it’s this: Regardless of the challenges that life throws at you, every obstacle can serve as a stepping stone toward becoming a better version of yourself. Much Love!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of my favorite places in Atlanta include the Botanical Gardens, The Beltline (Ponce CIty-Market), Downtown Decatur, and my hometown of Cartersville, GA. I love all things food, so here are some of my top recommendations: Superica, Lan Zhou Ramen, Jefferson’s, Rain Thai and Sushi Bar, Bar Taco, and Farmburger. And if you’re in need of a caffeine boost, Bar Coffee Atlanta is a must-visit. Atlanta has a large live music and event scene. I feel like almost every weekend there’s 100 things to do!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to extend my gratitude to my family, including my sweet sweet son Shiloh, my Mom, my wonderful sisters Tracy and Kim, and my older brother Deontae, as well as all my little sisters. You’ve been my pillar of strength and endless support.

Additionally, I am thankful for the exceptional educators I’ve had the privilege of learning from at AMDA and throughout my journey in NYC. Your guidance and knowledge have enriched my life in countless ways.

I owe a debt of gratitude to my incredible mentors, including John Bryan, Auri Marcus, Juan Cantu, Jim Elliot, Ray Virta, Lenny, Mio, Robert Manganaro, and Michael Magno. Your wisdom and mentorship have played a pivotal role in shaping my growth and development.

A special shoutout goes to my best friends Elliot, Kendall, Kris, Liesl, and Kenji. Your friendship and support mean the world to me.

Last but certainly not least, I want to express my appreciation to all those who have stood by me throughout my journey. Your support has touched my heart deeply, and I am genuinely thankful for each and every one of you.
