Meet Derrick Burton | REAL ESTATE BROKER/OWNER – D. BURTON PROPERTIES LLC

We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Burton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrick, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I would like to first start by stating that I am the son of an entrepreneur. My father has been a barber for about 60 years, operating on the same street the entire time in Biloxi, MS. So I grew up seeing what hardworking and determination looks like. Hard work and determination are 2 of the most important characteristics one should possess to be successful in whatever career path they take. In addition to being a person that works hard and is determined, I also know that staying focused, being prepared and disciplined, along with maintaining a positive attitude, has definitely helped me to succeed as the Owner and Managing Broker of D. Burton Properties LLC.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My real estate career began as an investor. Before I purchased my first rental property, I felt it was necessary for me to know as much about real estate investing as I could. So I joined a real estate investing organization to meet others that were doing the same thing in addition to taking classes and attending many seminars. I wanted to be well prepared before I actually purchased a property and manage tenants. After a number of years as an investor, I received my real estate license so I could have direct access to properties on the market. After being an agent I found that I was rarely using those things that my broker’s office provided but I was still required to pay for them. Therefore, I decided to obtain my brokers license and work for myself. I knew it would be a challenge but I was determined to be my own boss in a field that I truly enjoy. D. Burton Properties LLC is a brokerage that is dedicated to providing its clients with the smoothest home buying or selling process as possible because we know that buying and selling a home is not only a business transaction but a personal and emotional experience as well.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When family or friends come to visit, my favorite place to take them for food is Baltimore Crab and Seafood and Two Urban Licks. The food at both restaurants are absolutely delicious. I would take them to the MLK Jr. Historical site and The National Center for Civil and Human Rights. I would also take them to see a play at the Fox Theatre, The Alliance Theatre or The Southwest Art Center.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First of course JESUS for blessing me with the ability to do what I do and the necessary characteristics needed to be successful. Secondly my beautiful wife, Vanessa, who has been my biggest supporter throughout this journey. Everyone who knows her, knows that she is a BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT, I would like to thank her for all her encouragement, love, and support. I am truly thankful to JESUS that I am the one she calls HUSBAND and she is the one I call WIFE.
