We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrica Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derrica, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I believe life shows us everyday if something is for you and to keep going or to redirect energy and focus when something no longer works or serves us.

For example, I have been a makeup artist for over 8 years. There’s been times where I asked if I should keep going or find something else to focus on. Then I think back to all the times where it worked, when it made sense and when I felt in my heart I was right and I redirect my focus and energy into how to recreate that feeling and what it takes to get there. When something just never works or there’s too many roadblocks until it goes right is when I accept it and move on. I never say I’m giving up… it’s either not my time or not for me.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Hello! I am Derrica and I am a makeup artist who specializes in TV/Film, Editorial, Commercial, Beauty and Bridal work. I really believe what sets me apart from other artists is the energy and presence I bring to either set I’m on or client I’m with.

Passing on good energy always puts your client at ease and makes for a great time. Something so intimate to being in someone’s personal space and in their face doing makeup there has to be a level of trust and understanding you have to be able to build with them. And I have heard from my clients that that’s not always the normal experience they have prior to me.

To know my brand Decked Out Beauty is to know quality and integrity. I am going to go above and beyond for my clients. With that comes being the best artist for the job. I’m always learning, always a student first

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are gonna turn up! First we are brunching. We are going to get the mimosas going! After brunch it’s giving a paint and sip moment. I love poetry so the best poetry slam location to hear a good word. Apache Cafe is a great place to visit while here.

I don’t know if it is weird but I LOVE the Buford Highway farmers market. Love seeing all the fruits and vegetables stacked and color coordinated.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel that with an organization that I want to see showcased is Voix Noire. Voix Noire helps black marginalized genders which crosses over to so many different kinds of folks that partners with them to stay afloat in the time of need. Many artists and families may need assistance to continue doing the work and passions they love to do and Voix Noire helps bridge the gap.

The founder Creighton Leigh has made this her life’s passion and I believe she has made such an impact in my life as well as others.
