We had the good fortune of connecting with Derek Binette and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derek, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was 20 years old, and I had been DJing on the side for a couple of years. I had a good friend who was interested in starting a business with me, so we got a loan from my Grandmother to buy our first set of speakers and lights. Music was always a large part of my life growing up, and I was fascinated by the affect music has on energy, mood and memories.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started the business in 2001, with a love for entertaining people through music. Today, I represent some of Atlanta’s most talented DJ’s & Emcees. I remember getting my first ATL club gig at 20 years old (Makos in Buckhead). We played Rock, Hip-Hop, House, 80’s & 90’s. There was a lot I didn’t know about, but I was a sponge, and soaked up every new song, and learned how to successfully move a room by telling a story with music. We were also responsible for creating a timeline every night that included mini events, games, announcements, etc. They called us programmers, and I took that knowledge with me as I began to develop timelines for mobile events. My parents neighbor gave me a shot, and booked me for their sons wedding. I’ll never forget how excited, and nervous I was! Everything went well…and I was off and running! After that, word of mouth took over, and we were getting booked nearly every weekend. Now, I’m able to support a team of DJ’s by proving them an opportunity to do what they love.
I love the journey music takes me on. I love the acquisition of finding new music, and the nostalgic power of a classic song. There is a science of moving a room of people with music, and I have developed a sixth sense for using music to build and hold dance floors. I manipulate tempos to beat-match and create fluid, clever, seamless transitions from song to song. People deserve to celebrate through music, dance, and forget about their daily stressors.
I’m more excited about this industry then I’ve ever been, and I’m grateful to be able to produce remarkable events!!!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Little Five Points has great people watching, and good record stores.. Krog Street Market is a super fun place to eat. The Battery is poppin when the Braves are in town. Depending on the week, there is always solid live music in the city!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My success is dedicated to my late Grandmother and biggest fan, Aida Savelesky. She encouraged me every step of the way to follow my dreams, and do what makes me happy.
