We had the good fortune of connecting with DeQuann Piner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeQuann, how do you think about risk?
When I think about a risk, I’m thinking of the chances of making something happen with a decision that must be made, whether its a new job out of state, a pay cut to secure temporary happiness, or something that will benefit me in the long run, you never truly know what can happen in life and sometimes you have to make a move regardless. I would say I took major risks in my career as a Chef, I decided to leave behind Atlanta to relocate to Colorado to improve my culinary skills and for a better work opportunity, although I was not familiar with the area I would say this risk I took is probably one of the best decisions i’ve ever made in my life, from growing up in a low opportunity town to in just a few short years graduating culinary school & earning the opportunity to travel the world and elevate my skills, its almost unbelievable how the risk I took made a major impact on my career, I would say had I never done this risk I probably wouldn’t be where I am today, I am not only just a certified Sous Chef, I am also an Aspiring Actor, YouTuber, and Music Producer, when you google DeQuann Piner, you will see my elevation and progress, my career is everything I manifested and I couldn’t be more proud of myself.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In 2016 when I was finished with Culinary School my school required an externship where we had to work somewhere related to our major with enough hours to convert into credits, once the assignment was finished I was burned out from my job and wanted to travel somewhere much better with higher pay, and the opportunity to leave Atlanta, Georgia to move to Colorado was when my career had officially began, I worked my way up from prep cook to line cook to Sous Chef in under a few short years, I overcame the challenges of being counted out, doubted, underestimated and most of all being from the south, when you’re from the south they assume you aren’t educated and won’t make it places, but I proved the stereotypes and haters wrong. My biggest lesson learned I would say in life and my career overall is knowing when to close a chapter, and understanding that everyone isn’t always going to every chapter with you, in other words All good things must come to an end, I’ve taken many breaks from cooking because I haven’t had time to focus on my other career goals: I am a YouTuber, Actor, and Music Producer, maybe its time I give cooking a break professionally, I gave 10 years of my life to this industry, I want to do something else before I get too much older one day. My brand is all about manifesting a lifestyle you want, but I also need to make time for the things I really want out of life and it seems that I haven’t been doing that as much maybe 2024 will be different for me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow, this is interesting my friend is actually visiting soon I would always recommend for someone to check out as far as the food scene: “Matthews Cafeteria” in Tucker, Georgia for lunch, or definitely The Marietta Diner, those are some of my favorite restaurants I’ve experienced. For entertainment I would definitely take them on the Marta Train just so they can see the tone for Atlanta before we decide where to go, I am musically inclined and enjoy going to concerts so I always recommend anyone to befriend a friend/ family member that lives in Atlanta because this is the place to be when your favorite artist is in town, the city is really LIT & traffic is no joke, so the marta train is good to ride because the city reacts to entertainers very well. I would definitely take my homeboys/ homegirls to Perimeter Mall, Trap Music Museum, iFly, Piedmont Park, SkyView Atlanta or Mercedes Benz Stadium because it seems to always be a vibe when I go there. You can learn so much just by visiting Atlanta in a few days but what i’ve learned from living here in my time is always be prepared to see something you haven’t seen before. I hope when my friend does come and visit they make the most of their time because we are music peers and have been friends well over 5 years.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lee County in Alabama. This amazing organization helped my success journey in a tremendous way: I learned how to build connections, build a resume, money management and most of all they believed in me the most. When I was younger they encouraged me to be careful with what I posted online because everything you post is there forever, they helped me build my confidence up, improve my studying habits, and they still support me even in 2024, I wish to one day give back to this amazing organization and I hope to encourage everyone to get involved with your community because they believe in your potential the most.
