We had the good fortune of connecting with Deora Clairé and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deora Clairé, why did you pursue a creative career?
One of the gifts God has given me is the ability to write and sing songs. Creating a melody and telling a story or simply expressing my feelings through music has been a passion of mine since elementary. Aside from enjoying writing and performing, artists like Whitney Houston, Mahalia Jackson, Alicia Keys, and Beyoncé, inspired me to pursue a music career of becoming a Singer-songwriter.

What keeps me motivated to keep going in this career is my belief that being a Singer-songwriter is part of my purpose. Through my songs I can inspire and uplift people with messages of faith, hope, and love while giving God the glory.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My music is special because I write from my experiences with faith, hope, and love in English and Spanish to positively impact listeners through my soulful voice. It hasn’t been easy because I haven’t always had the confidence in my voice to be a solo artist despite having been in choirs and singing at church. It wasn’t until I was 20 years old that I gained the confidence, but even then I didn’t strongly pursue a music career as an artist until I was 23 years old.

Then, a year later in July of 2019, I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder from having a severe manic episode which resulted in me being admitted into a mental hospital. That completely shook my confidence in myself overall. I thought my dreams were over. I went through depression and denial. I struggled with my mental health for nearly two years, but I’m thankful for the journey because it inspired my first and second album I released this year in January and August respectively.

I’ve learned through it all to keep the faith and never give up on myself or my dreams because God has a plan and already knew what I would face before I did. The blessing is that He works it all out for my good.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely have to take them to the Bass Pro Pyramid first because it’s one of my favorite places in Memphis, TN! I love watching the feeding of the fish in their aquarium, eating at the restaurant on the lower level, and riding the freestanding elevator to the top for spectacular views from the Lookout.

Next, I would take them for a walk down Beale Street to see the rich history of Memphis. Afterwards, I would go to the Cozy Corner restaurant for the best barbecue ribs in town! It’s Black owned, and the family operates it. Lastly, I would go to Shelby Farms to walk around the park and watch the sunset.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I would like to shoutout my God given parents for supporting me by listening to my rough mixes when I’m working on something new, giving me their feedback, and helping me perfect my craft. They encourage me to keep going and show up at my performances.

Secondly, I would like to shoutout the rest of my family and friends because they also support me by listening to my music, sharing it and showing up and out at my performances. I’m so blessed because of the love they show and the feedback they give me to help me grow.
