We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Dawidowski and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Denise, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
While I would love to give this amazing story as to why I started Korzen Hair, I can’t say I have one. What I can tell you is Korzen Hair became an idea after I had been laid off by my employer in 2020. After being on the corporate America roller coaster for so many years, I decided to try my hand at entrepreneurship one last time. At the start of my entrepreneur journey, I worked as a professional hair stylist for over 10 years. Although, my initial career didn’t take off the way I wanted it to, it was something different about this time. When the idea of starting a hair care brand came to me I thought about my “Why”. That’s when I remembered working for a privately owned company where I had the privilege of interviewing one of the owners. I asked him this very same question, “What was your thought process behind starting your own business?” His answer. ” go into something you know how to do.” His answer has stuck with me since the beginning of launching Korzen Hair. I know hair, I know black hair and I’m here to change the way we see our hair, handle our hair, and to change the expectations we put on our hair. In short, I started Korzen Hair to provide products that will help women get back to healthy hair.
What should our readers know about your business?
Korzen Hair launched its first products in Fall of 2021. Our brand focuses on how to get back to healthy hair and maintain it. We pride ourselves on being honest with our customers when it comes to our products and their hair expectations. We believe in staying in our own lane while learning from others who have been in the business longer than we have. As a brand we’re not here to compete but to provide products to a community of people who are not focused on the length of their hair but the overall health. I am proud to be in a space where I can provide natural hair care products and professional advice on hair health, it takes me back to my days as a hairstylist. I’m excited that my brand has allowed me to donate to an organization that helps families like mine with Autism. Although, I am not where I want to be in business, I have gotten this far by faith, long nights, determination, crying, falling down, getting back up and with the support of my family. While this journey as an entrepreneur has not been easy, it’s worth it because it’s in my blood. For every challenge I’ve been faced with there has been a greater lesson on the other end. Some of the lessons I’ve learned are to stick with my goals and objectives and not let others progress interfere, work on my brand the same way I would get up in the morning to work for someone else, run my own race, continue to do research- there is something new to learn everyday, get a trusted mentor and most importantly, understand my audience. I could write another book based on what I want the world to know about me but for the sake of time, I will say, I want the world to know that I fall down like everyone else, and in those times when I can’t get right back up, I give myself no more than 3 days. On the third day I pull myself up and start again no matter what because I know a dream is a vision from God asking for permission to live. Korzen Hair is my dream, my vision which only I can breathe life into.
Fun fact: Korzen is a polish word for “root’, We are the ” Root to Healthy Hair”.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve only been in Fort Lauderdale for a year but I would take my friend to Las Olas strip for for food (preferably tacos), downtown Delray Beach, Brickell city for shopping, a boat ride to tour the city from the water, and Miami art district.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give thanks to God for the vision, my husband, Tomasz Dawidowski who has sacrificed for our family so that I could pursue my dream, my father, Charles Knight who has been an entrepreneur for over 50 years, thanks for instilling a strong work ethic in me, which is a valuable trait to have. My daughter, Eriyon Demari’A who started the journey with me, I would like to thank my son Triston Dior for being the most supportive son a mother could have, his dedication to the brand does not go unnoticed and one day I hope to show him how much his sacrifice has meant to me, Debra Vines the Founder of “The Answer Inc.” for partnering with us in order to help families with Autism and a specail thank you to my customers for believing in me, the products and the brand.
