We had the good fortune of connecting with Denise Benson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denise, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Work/life balance is something I definitely struggled with in the early parts of my photography career. Because I operate two businesses I often found myself burned out and without a personal life. I knew I needed to make changes so that I could create a good balance for myself and create a better experience for my clients. Some changes I made included batching my work so that I could be more efficient with my time, setting boundaries for my clients by informing them that I would only be responding to emails or phone calls between set hours (no texting at all), and setting work hours for myself so that I’m not up at 10pm still editing. When the work day is done, it’s done. And finally, taking necessary time off. I make sure to set a schedule for myself and only work on the days that I set as work days. I take at least one full weekend off per month, all holidays and four weeks at the end of the year so that I can rest, spend time with loved ones and go into the new year refreshed. Of course there’s never going to be a 50/50 balance at all times and certain times of the year will be busier than others, but by creating boundaries for myself and my clients I’ve been able to balance everything much better.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Although I’ve operated in the insurance agency alongside my father since 2002, stepping out completely on my own to begin something new is scary. I wasn’t sure if I had what it takes to make this a successful business and for many years played things too small. I’m just now realizing that God has so much greater in store for my photography business and that the best is yet to come. Niching down to branding photography has combined my love for photography with wanting to help other entrepreneurs build their own legacies. It’s what I’m truly excited and passionate about!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My father, Marshall Benson, has been instrumental in making me the business owner that I am today. He co-owns Benson Insurance Agency alongside me and has always supported my dream of owning a photography business. He taught me everything I know about creating an amazing client experience and how to run a profitable business.
