Meet DeMya Robinson | Entreprenuer & Girl Boss

We had the good fortune of connecting with DeMya Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeMya, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process was I wanted to create a product that I felt was going to solve a problem. Human trafficking & sexual assault is a common issue all over the world and I wanted to create a product that would make women feel a little bit safer. I also wanted to create a product that made them comfortable carrying and that’s the reason I pushed for my products to be disguised in a girly/feminine way,
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my business Pretty Defense in April of 2020 in the middle of a pandemic(Covid-19). I was on leave from work inside the house bored because everyone was on quarantine. I used my down time to think of different ways to make my situation better. I had always wanted to be an entrepreneur but just like everyone else I didn’t know what I wanted to do. One day a lightbulb when off in my head and I decided to start a self defense business. Quickly the business started to grow and I made my first 6 figures in the first 4 months. I was most excited about my growth because I couldn’t believe how I was able to reach this milestone in business. The road defiantly wasn’t easy but I took every downfall as a learning lesson and ultimately knew that I had a 4 year old that was depending on me so failing was not an option. Along the way I quickly learned that everyone doesn’t support you but you have to take your mind off the ones that don’t and focus on those that do support your vision. I would like the world to know that Pretty Defense is more than a brand we are a movement. We educate and empower women to protect and defend themselves no matter what.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friends were in town the weekend would have to go as such, First stop would have to be brunch & mimosas at Gotchas Breakfast bar on Cascade. Their food is the bomb. We would also have to go shopping at Phipps Plaza because a little retail therapy always helps. We would probably end the nights at boogalou restaurant & lounge because the vibes are nice and food is amazing. Some of my other favorite places are Ponce city market, the whole downtown scenery, the garden room, juicy crab, basically anything that’s a vibe and ATL is full of them.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shout out to someone that is very close to me. My big sister from another mother Kimberly Jackson. I give her a lot of credit because she is also a Entrepreneur/Girl boss and has been along side me my entire journey. Kim is the person who no matter what is going on weather it’s personal or business she is always there when I need someone to talk to. A lot of people don’t understand how tuff the business game can be and Kim is always there to support me and inspire me to keep pushing. I feel as though a strong support system is the root to a successful business owner so I would also like to dedicate a shout out to my daughter Dior, family, friends, customers and most importantly God.
