We had the good fortune of connecting with Demi Cortez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Demi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I decided to start my own business because I ultimately wanted to be successful at my own merit. I didn’t want to have to depend on anyone else’s decision on how successful I would be. I wanted to find something I was passionate about. More like my calling or purpose if you want to call it and excel at it. I truly believe that once an individual walk into their purpose, in reference to their contribution to the world, the success will come. That purpose led me to start my own business after not being offered the opportunities to advance and progress in my industry. At that point, I made the decision to take my future into my own hands and create a lane that was destined for me to walk in successfully. I haven’t looked back since.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’ve been an esthetician for over 7 years. The skincare and beauty industry has always been a love of mine. It dates back to seeing my mother putting on her favorite Avon products back in the day. Afterwards she would be glowing like a chocolate nugget on a spring day. I knew I had to be apart of the industry somehow. After struggling with acne most of my teens, I found the world of esthetics during my early 20s and began my career. I started Demi Cortez Skincare back in 2018. I initially wanted to create a corrective skincare line to use during my esthetics services that catered to all skin types and ethnicities. It was born a year later.
During the past few years my brand has continued to grow and expand beyond my dreams. I initially started with a handful of products and now have expanded my skincare line. I now have Demi Cortez Bath and Body and Demi Cortez Home Collection. I now also offer my clients painless laser hair removal and laser skin services.
It definitely took hard work and dedication to get to the place I am now. Sacrifice and staying focused helped me to stay the course.
I ultimately want my brand to touch people and make an impact on their lives. Rather its my esthetics services, skincare brand or mood elevating home collection products. I want people to be empowered and motivated by the impact this young black man is making on the industry.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Im a big foodie, so we would probably eat each day. I would definitely have to start with my favorite wing spot, J. R. Crickets in Atlanta. You can’t visit Atlanta and not go here for the wings. It’s a non negotiable. Lol. We’d also have to visit a few spots on the belt-line for drinks and a nice view of the area. Maybe catch a vibe in the midtown area for socializing and a few laughs. I’d probably end the week at a popular brunch spot. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to contribute my success thus far to my support system. I truly have the best support system. My partner, my close friends, and family keep me grounded and motivated. During those times when I didn’t believe in myself they were and are always there to give me that nudge of confidence I needed to push through. Aside from them my supporters/clients and social media friends also keep me going. The recognition and positive feedback I receive from them on a DAILY keep me going strong.
