We had the good fortune of connecting with Demetric Sims and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Demetric, what are you inspired by?
My wonderful wife and beautiful daughters are my inspiration and support system, who have taught me the importance of patience, kindness, and laughter. Much of my success, I owe to them.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My path to veterinary medicine has been anything but traditional. Growing up in Atlanta,
Georgia, I saw firsthand how pets were often considered a luxury, and veterinary care felt out of
reach for many families. This reality sparked my curiosity about the diseases that afflict our
canine and feline companions and the consequences of limited access to veterinary care. I
realized that the lack of awareness about preventable zoonotic diseases not only put animals at
risk but also threatened public health and the deeply rooted human-animal bond. I wanted to
change that.
From this realization, I envisioned B.A.R.K. (Because Animals Require Kindness)—a nonprofit
dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership, increasing access to veterinary care, and
preventing zoonotic diseases. But I knew that a vision alone wasn’t enough. I immersed myself
in the veterinary field, volunteering at animal sanctuaries during college to gain hands-on
experience. Through my mentors, I developed a deep appreciation for the role veterinary
medicine plays in pathology and public health, further fueling my passion for the field.
After earning my Bachelor of Science at Clayton State University, I pursued my passion for
veterinary medicine by working as a primary assistant technician in a specialty oncology unit.
This experience taught me invaluable lessons about the human-animal bond, advanced medical
treatments, and—most importantly—the empathy required to support both patients and their
owners through difficult times. Inspired to deepen my scientific knowledge, I earned a Master of
Science in Comparative Biomedical Sciences from the University of Georgia, where I conducted
extensive research on the biomechanics of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in
domestic animal species. Balancing full-time work and graduate studies reinforced my resilience,
discipline, and commitment to veterinary medicine.
Now, as the Founder and CEO of B.A.R.K., I have transformed my vision into action by
organizing community-driven initiatives such as vaccine drives, wellness events, and educational
outreach programs. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the increasing need for accessible
veterinary care, and I am determined to be part of the solution. Through B.A.R.K., I aim to
bridge the gap between underserved communities and preventive veterinary care, ensuring that
no pet goes without the medical attention they deserve.
Veterinary medicine is not just my career path—it is my calling. I am committed to bringing my
curiosity, empathy, and dedication to patient care to the field, with a long-term goal of becoming
a board-certified clinical or anatomical veterinary pathologist. With the education and training I
will gain in veterinary school; I am confident that I can make a lasting impact on both animal and
human health.
