We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah Olivia Farmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deborah Olivia, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
I have 2 favorite quotes or affirmations. They are, “I am the thinker who thinks the thoughts that creates the thing.” The second quote is- “It Works If You Work It!” I am a Johnnie Colemon baby. I was baptized by Dr. Johnnie Colemon who was an influential minister and teacher in the New Thought movement. Those quotes/affirmations mean so much to me, because it daily reminds me of the power God gave us to change things with our thoughts and our words.I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of speaking things into existence and manifesting the life we desire. Let your words do the work to produce the life you want to live.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My full-service communications firm elevates the profile of dynamic individuals and organizations while fostering community growth. BFMG has a standard of high-level performance with an emphasis on quality, not quantity. Having worked in the television industry for nearly 20 years in Chicago, I took a leap of faith and launched my own business after leaving a high-profile and highly compensated job. It wasn’t always easy, but with prayer, mentors pouring into me, business school and support of other business owners, I was able to keep the business going. I continued to connect with and rely on like-minded individuals who were in the same space of growing and expanding their businesses. It is true when they say, “Iron sharpens Iron.”

Throughout this journey, I’ve learned invaluable lessons, and one of the most important is the importance of seeking funding early on and not shouldering the entire load myself. There are tons of resources and funding opportunities for small business owners, and I recommend we tap into them-early and often!

My brand is in a constant state of evolution, but at its core, it remains true to my values of serving others with integrity, passion, empathy, style, and grace.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would hope my bestie would be in town the weekend the Men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity were hosting their annual Sundresses & Seersucker event that is held in May. We would hit that up! We would spend time at Fellaship, where they have it all….the fellas, the food, fantastic sounds and fabulous fellowship. Of course, we’d be rocking our fedoras! For breakfast, I highly recommend Breakfast Boys, and Milk N Honey, both delicious options. We would also swing by RICE-Russell Innovation Center for Entrepreneurs, Black Wallstreet and The Gathering Spot.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
