We had the good fortune of connecting with Deborah Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deborah, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
When I think about risk when it comes to my business, I know that it is one of my driving forces. Taking calculated risks is most important because it determines direction. Meaning that even if you are scared, but calculated the risk you have to go for it. Just jump. In my life, I am a bit more calculating.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a leather artisan who is designing and creating primarily in the exotic leather space, it is important to me that my work adds value to anyone who invests in us through purchasing. The quality of raw materials and how they are sourced is our promise to contribute to sustainability. In addition, we still offer bespoke options to own our products. I am excited about growth. The future looks great for introducing more people who look like me to this industry.

I played golf professionally. As a former athlete when the career is over, you have to find new ways to create an income and it is not usually by way of a job. After years of teaching golf, I made a few more career stops in construction, t-shirt sales, consulting, and promotional products. My love for working with leather is truly purpose-driven. Working with people who walk away looking and feeling good is what I live for. But owning a business is not easy either. Being an entrepreneur and doing it solo comes with daily challenges. These range from working with materials for the first time to balancing the finances.
People should know that Glover and Wyre is a one-of-a-kind leather company. We make all our products in a studio in Covington, Georgia. We source and use American tanneries for our leathers and exotic skins, like Alligator.
A woman-owned company.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I am a golfer, and my best friend also golfs, so here goes.

Golf at the Manor Golf and Country Club. Golfers always need some 19th-hole time so we would head to Pappadeaux because it is one of her favorites.
We have to get in several nights of dinner and we would start with my club, The Gathering Spot.
Arnette’s Chop shop has to be on the list. Just in case I forgot golf each day. Head up to Lake Oconee for an overnight stay.
Seafood night at home with friends where I get to show off my culinary skills.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Growing up in Antigua, I was raised by my uncle Winston Phoenix. He was an entrepreneur all his life. Everything I do today is because of the lessons he taught me. At age eleven, he told me to “remember that you don’t have to have a job, but you must have an income”. It took me a while to understand it, but I held on to it throughout this journey of owning my own business.
